Editing problem: Why won`t my rendered AVI file play back correctly on my TV? HELP*

RWB (Elite) posted this on Sunday, 5th March 2006, 14:13

Having just directed a music video, I edited the file in Sony Video Vegas and firstly rendered the video as a Quicktime file (relatively good quality, 78MB). The file is perfect and displays all of the colours as they should be (and as they are in Video Vegas).

When I rendered it to AVI and burned it onto DVD courtesy of Sony DVD Architect, the image went considerably darker (unwatchable in places) and moments of aliasing were apparent in certain shots. I tried again with an MPG file and the same thing happened. I`ve even tried brightening the video and re-rendering it to AVI/MPG but it still appears too dark (or at least not how it should be) and aliasing is still apparent.

I have tried watching the DVD on two different TVs - a Sony 16:9 and a Philips 4:3. The problem was worse on the Sony but neither TVs reproduced the video properly. This sort of thing has never happened to me before and I have been burning DVDs/rendering AVIs for quite a few months. It might be worth mentioning that the video is shot entirely in black and white, with several filters applied to raise the contrast levels and basically make it look more stylised.

What do I do? It`s really frustrating me and I want to get this sorted ASAP. :)

it`s all in the compression - what format is native to Sony Vegas (quite why you are using this I`m not sure!!)

When you a rendering you are encoding so you need to see what settings are available and what codec is being used... the same goes for mpeg..

what resoultion are you rendering at? Is this a DV recording?...

I would really recommend Pinnacle Liquid Edition over Vegas.. and for compostion and keying use Combustion 3 ..

I`m rendering at 720x480 (PAL) and Vegas supports multiple file types; I chose AVI because I have always used it in the past. I think it uses built-in codecs to render the files, although I have specified that it should render the upper field first as opposed to the default lower field because I hear this is better for TV playback.

Would the compression affect the brightness/darkness as well?
