Earning money from referring, what is all this?

richardbradley66 (Competent) posted this on Thursday, 25th August 2005, 11:32

I see loads of sites saying if you join their affilliate programme they will give you hard cash. Well how does this work, how much do these people give you and can people earn a living doing this? All seems a bit `sus` to me. Can anyone help me to get my head around all this or better still, tell me yr own experiences of how much you can earn (Not asking for you to name who you work for just what kinda money can be made from all this?) ;)

wel,, it depends really, usually when you hear the word "referal" it means a dodgy pyramid scheme where you pay £x amount & get others to do the same (quoting you as there refferal source) once you get enough mugs (i mean people) to sign up you get you`re device (usually a mobile phone or i-pod type thing) the problem here is that the "lists" invariably collapse leaving upto a few thousand people out of pocket with no chance of getting there money back.

BUT an affiliate is usually advertising based, these can be perfectly harmless, some people like reestit mutton (very sp) try to make a living this way, & you can often find him & others in the bargain buckets forum where they give us details of some of the bargains they have unearthed, if you use there affiliate link they get x amount for refering you to the seller reestit & others provide a very apreciated service. but the pyramid schemes are simply the devils tools for ripping of the gullable, for every person that shouts about how happy they are cos they got there "whatever" for £20 there are hundreds that get nowt.

hope this helps :)

Thanks Oggy, so people can put a link on their sites, and if someone clicks that link and goes to the said site, they get a small commision in effect ?

i would imagine thats roughly how they work, most of the "affiliate" links would take you directly to the offer or product & at the same time it would register that the "hit~" came from X affiliate.

BUT i should mention that affiliate hyperlinks are not allowed on this site, but i think you are allowed to put a none hyperlink link in if you clearly state that it`s an affiliate link, but please check on that as i could be wrong :)

Which is a paid for advert :/ are you paying towards the upkeep of this site ? no you are not, you are just spamming it.

EDIT=i`ve removed a part of this post as i`ll give mark the benefit of the doubt seeing as he removed his affiliate link :) & i`m sorry if you got a hostile response across the forums due to your referal schemes/links but please understand that the majoraty of "new" posters are just trying to drum up business by spamming throughout the forums & it happens so often that some of the rugulars (me included) automaticaly think the worst of it,,,,,, But if you just want to become oart of our little community then let me be the first to say Welcome :D
