Page 1 of Moral/Ethical Question

A "friend" (cough) asks, is it morally or ethically OK to download music via Kazaa Lite, etc? That is, free.
The music my "friend" (cough) is downloading is impossible to buy anywhere in the world. They are old gay dance classics circa seventies and eighties ("friend" tells me) and now no longer available on record or CD other than downloading (lending?) as freebies.
Morally/ethically OK in your opinion?
Morals and ethics worry my "friend" (cough).

I think that if they are commercially unavailble then you `friend` (cough) should go for it!

And I think that it may be prudent to suggest that "your friend" does something about that nasty cough!

Benolin could be the answer?

The funny thing is - is that they can only "do you" if you are sharing music. So downloading is OK (though still considered illegal), uploading music is sharing and this is where they are fining people.

Download for sure, upload DON`T DO IT.

You could try thses sites and pay a small amount.....

Both are based in Russia and are a legal grey area over here (according to the Daily Telegraph) they may have your music (as they tend to have a lot of weird stuff).

Tell your `friend` that my `friend` said that morally, yeah, its wrong to download music for free from P2P sites. But my friend also said thats its really hard to give a s***........

Funnily enough I was talking about this with one of my friends (no, seriously) who runs a small record label (Technique Recordings, fact fans, get on the net and buy some vinyl) and he says that 12" sales have been hit pretty hard by p2p but, conversely, their music is getting to more people and more are turning out when they DJ because more people have heard of them. Bit of a double edged sword, but i think they would prefer the record sales.

I think if you genuinely cant get it elsewhere, I wouldnt worrry about it. Even if you can get it elsewhere, I wouldnt worry about it......

Remembering my "friend" with the tickly throat ( ;) ) is also religious so has to struggle religiously and philosophically with issues at many a turn. Some mightn`t agree , but that is the way it is.
I think, from reading the above, my friend would conclude that it is morally and ethically incorrect to download if the music was easily/readily/available in the shops, but morally and ethically OK if not available anywhere else (casting aside the legalities, I guess) but via free p2p.
I think I, whoops, my "friend", will have to sit on that one (as it were).

Edit: On further reflection it might have to be a moral/ethical bypass as, once again, there is no certain answer. I just remember my "friend" used to do tape transferring years ago, which was even legally OK, I think, if it was his records.
I think I will just tell my "friend" to go back to contemplating "what is Truth". Hmmm. :/
That should shut him up for a coupla hours.
