Do you think our country has changed forever?

HaGGis! (Elite) posted this on Thursday, 14th July 2005, 09:53

I`m struggling with this.. I`ve always been proud of living in a country with such a rich diversity of culture and race.. especially in the North East of England where the term Geordie is used to describe anyone - be they asian, african, irish etc..

but what happens now?.. do you feel perhaps cheated?. or let down?.. or even scared?.. or angry?... I`m struggling with a little bit of everything.. as someone who doesn`t believe in God or an afterlife, I am furious that religion once again has been perverted for selfish causes?..

I find it strange that giving some of the extreme opposites in arguments prior to the London Bombing .. that there has not been thread after thread of discussion and argument?..

so tell me.. what is everyone thinking?

For me, nothing has really changed at all. The school i went to was at least 40-50% asian with at least half of those being Muslim. As young as 11-16, there were already some real fanatical practitioners. The main problem is that, lik emost young people, they question things. And when the community elders dont answer they get p***ed off.

Ive seen young Muslims growing increasingly hardline for years. Now they seem to be ideal targets for the cultists who come and recruit them. British based muslims are the ideal `sleepers` for people like this.

99.99% of people are getting on with their daily lives. Its just that the fanatical .01% have now become targets to be groomed by these cock smokers and, as such, are now more dangerous. The only thing that might have changed is a domino effect which see`s the average Joe Muslim`s life being made harder by the mistrust of other races (thanks to the actions of a minority) which may well lead to their withdrawal from society and an increase in fanatical tendancies.......

Anyway, in summary, for me nothing has changed. There are always dick heads trying to spoil the fun in whatever you do. You cant let it get to you or these salad-tossers have won. And remember *they* want you to hate/mistrust muslims. It makes their cowardly deeds that bit easier to justify.

Please elaborate on that. I really am interested to know how `liberal` policies are `50% responsible` for the bombings last thursday.

I imagine there may have been some `left wing do gooders` who died on Thursday.

I neither feel let-down or scared. Not sure why we should feel let-down,apart from perhaps by the security services, but then as they have already mentioned, the lads who did this were `cleanskins` and so were not on lists of people to watch.

One or more of them went to Pakistan to `study religion`. No crime against that. One or more of them became `ultra-religious` when back in this country..again, hardly a crime, otherwise I suspect the Archbishop of Canterbury and many of the Royal Family would be locked up (we can but dream eh?).

There are the morons who call this a results of the multi-cultural society we live in. This is obviously rubbish and I won`t demean this thread by mentioning that sort of idiot again (unless they start spouting off on here).

I just feel very sad that there are those who are so screwed up that they are easily led into believing that by blowing yourself up and taking as many people as you can with you will automatically give you a place in some inaginary paradise surrounded by whatever it is they think they`re going to get.

I`m not sure that there have been any documented atheist suicide bombers. I rather think that we would like to enjoy as long a life as possible and just be nice to people despite the differences between almost everyone on the planet.

I mistrust all religion anyway.. not just Islam.. you just have to look at Ireland to see how "marching season" is nothing more than an excuse to fight each other.. honestly the Python`s couldn`t have written a more bizarre sketch...

I work with a lad from pakistan who is a muslim.. and he has just been very quite over the last week.. he has a wife and two kids and must be thinking about their safety.. i think it will take some time for things to get back to normal.. i mean.. if they are blowing up rucksacks left at bus stops in Darlington... how can things not be different?

I was going to say No, but have changed my mind. I think this country will change, and hopefully for the better. There hasn`t been a massive backlash against the Asian community and it appears that the community are not being blamed or mistrusted by the majority of the population. The only positive note, and I struggle with that phrase but can`t find anything better to replace it, to come out of last weeks events is that it became clear very quickly that every community was affected by the bombs.

I was affected by Marie Fatayi-Williams pleas on TV regarding her son Anthony, and I suspect many others were too. Race, colour and minority thankfully were never commented on whilst these family members searched and appealed for their loved ones, and this is how we should be able to live and work together. As one nation.

There will clearly always be extremists on every side trying to wheedle their way in the hearts and minds of the vulnerable, but I believe that this coming together of people will help to show them that their way is wrong and that we are better standing together and sorting out whatever problems are thrown at us.

Go that way, really fast. If something gets in your way, turn...

And those who dance will spin and turn,
And those who wait will wait no more,
And those who talk will hear the words,
And those who see will fade and die,
And those who laugh will surely fall,
And those who know will always feel their backs against the thin wall...
