DVD`s that will not play in certain players - Is this an accepted norm??

markster (Competent) posted this on Saturday, 16th June 2001, 00:15

Hi

I have just been reading the area450.co.uk website (much better design and easier to read btw ) I noticed on the site a section that shows there are number of movies such as:

What Lies Beneath
Billy Elliot
The Trueman Show

That dont play on certain players, for example the WhafedaleM5.

This seems really odd to me, (and must surely be really anoying especially if the problem only develops half way through the film!?)

Can I ask is this typical of all players?. What do you do, just send the film back?.

depends on the film depends on the player. some films have been just nightmares (matrix anyone?) but the problem seems to be getting less and less. as to returning films well that depends on who you use. play247 wont do refunds on rce titles that you have ordered but they will probably be happier to refund if its a case that your machine just wont play a certain film.

if in doubt email the company before you order and see what their customer service dept says about their policy. but if you buy a half decent player than you really shouldnt have that many problems.

The problems listed at http://www.area450.co.uk/wharfey_problem_discs.htm would all appear to relate to the duff batch of Wharfedale M5s that first arrived in the UK from Taiwan.

Unfortunately, a number of the players have either slipped through quality control or been damaged in transit, resulting in massively inferior drives. The M5 problem discs listed at Area 450 all relate to damaged players as they all exhibit the same problems - stuttering playback, a symptom of the dodgy DVD drives.

Don`t let this put you off though - the vast majority of the M5 players are fine, and even if they`re not, Tesco`s are quite happy to do a swapsie for you. It just seems that lots of problems have been reported at Area 450, when really the M5 is flying off the shelves at Tesco - it`s a question of perspective. The old adage bad news travels faster than good news seems to apply !

Clayts - It is certainly worth mentioning it was the older players on
that webpage.

It certainly put me off the M5. And i imagine other people will read it and be put off!

Good point - but I`m an independent website, and not a trading division of Wharfedale !

I`ve taken on board your comments, however, and will amend the page to make it a bit clearer. Thanks for the heads up, I do appreciate it.

Hi Clayts
I appreciate you`re not connected to Wharfedale, and I do (as does everyone else) very much appreciate the independant site you created, it`s a great resource.
