Widescreen help! (2.35:1??)

assasin (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Friday, 15th June 2001, 12:51

I`ve just received True Romance through the post but the image seems to only take up a fraction of my widescreen`s screen? The disk says it`s 2.35:1 and my TV has 4:3 16:9 and a couple of others. Which one should I be using? And is it normal for it to only be half the size of the screen?

Thanks!

Sounds like the film is not anamorphic so it does not fit the screen, if it were anamorphic then it would fill the screen will small black bars top and bottom (if it were 1.85 something it fills the screen completely)

You find disks wich say they are 2.35:1 which are not anamorphic so they just sit in the middle of your 4:3 setting on your widscreen tv. I find this really annoying and always look for anamorphic disk.

If you have a zoom option zoom in untill it fills the screen not completly though still with the bars top and bottom u will notice it looks they same as if it were an anamporphic disk just u have to do it yourself and picture wont be as good.

Well my opion anyway

It`s completely normal - a widscreen is only about 1.78:1 (16:9) so a movie shown in 2.35:1 will still have black bars top & bottom (they just won`t be as pronounced as if you had a standard TV).

I`m guessing (I don`t have the same settings on my TV) you want 16:9 mode on your TV - which is really just an indicator that the picture is "widescreen".

True Romance is 2:35.1 anamorphic, which means that it should fill your widescreen TV horizontally, and there should be smallish black bars on the top and bottom. Is this what you`re seeing? If so, everything is correct.

You may want to check that your DVD player knows that it is outputting to a widescreen TV - many players have the option of changing this in their menus.

Nevermind, it`s working fine now for some reason.
