VHS/DVD trades - Want to trade my VHS`s somehow for DVDs, but want to find a way that is good.

Hi there. Recently, my parents (I am 17) purchased a 24-inch flatscreen TV. And with this came the promise from them to me that they would get a DVD player as well. Being an incurable film buff, this was a major development for me and I nearly fell on the floor. The problem with this is that it rips open a whole new dilemma for me.
I have 88 VHS tapes and want to try to find a way to trade them in for a copy of the same movies on DVD (Not copying from VHS to DVD, but rather get a whole new copy of the movie). One theory I had was to find any sites that buy used VHS`s and see that in lieu of the money that they would pay me, for me to pay a few extra bucks and if they had that DVD, that they would send it.
The reality is that if I actually bought these DVDs retails just to refit my collection into DVD, it would cost me probably over $3,000 dollars which is money I don`t have at this current time. I don`t really want to wait that long because I am highly anticipating this DVD player and am so excited about it (An example would be when I was in BrandsMart, a store that supplies appliances, TVs and other things, and I looked at the DVD of Licence To Kill, one of my favorite James Bond films. When I saw the features on there, I was just amazed).

I hope any of you out there can help with this or suggest any people or any companies that could help me with trading my VHS`s for DVDs or something of that nature. If any of you could help me, I would be eternally grateful.

Thank you to all who read this and I look forward to your replies.

Sincerely,

Rory L. Aronsky

I know a shop down old Trumpton Lane, where you can trade in VHS tapes for DVD`s. They also sell oil lamps, can`t remember his name Ala....Alad....can`t remember anyway A LAD IN the shop the other day traded 32 tapes and got 1/2 DVD . trouble is the shops in the NorthWest of England so its probably not much use to you. oops sorry.

Good luck with your search.

Is there not some kind of power plant somewhere that burns VHS tapes to make electricty? I know they can do this with car tyres so maybe they are doing the same with VHS, what with the huge demand that they all be burnt n`all, what with the DVD revolution n`all.

Hee hee.

I know that ther are companies that buy video collections, and I spoke to one, but they wanted a list of my films, and I have over 2,000 and couldn`t be arsed! They collect aswell but I don`t know what they pay. Not a lot I would have thought.
You can find their numbers in various film magazines like film review, and probably in some DVD magazines. Good luck,
Aaron

Aaron, do you possibly have the numbers from these companies? I unfortunately do not subscribe to any film magazines such as those or any DVD magazines as of yet. The only entertainment magazine I do subscribe to is Entertainment Weekly. Or are they on the web?

I would really appreciate this.

Thank you!!!

Rory

MovieCritic - are these VHS you bought or ones you taped yourself?

Either way I don`t think you will get a lot of money for them (that`s what some of the earlier posts are trying to tell you ;) ). Try selling your VHS collection on e-bay. Still, with the major stores selling next-to-new VHS at 3 for the price of 2 and so on (you can get 3 for £15 over here) you are going to lose out when replacing them with DVD`s.

Bite the bullet. I had over 30 VHS tapes (a piddling amount compared to you) and ended up giving them to my dad - people expect you to pay them to take them off your hands... Look for advice on this site to get the best deals to start building your DVD collection.

Got any porn?

Seriously tho - why don`t you copy the tapes to VCD. You`d need a video capture card, a CD writer and lots of time.
Failing that stick the tapes on the auctions - won`t get much, two or three quid if yer lucky.

I just wanted to thank everyone that helped me with my dilemma and even took jibes at me. I admit it, I deserved them being that I was so far behind in the techology. I just wanted to give an update on the progress.
First off, my Mum has decided to delay the delivery of the 24-inch flatscreen TV by a week so that she and my Dad can go to Brandsmart (An appliance and electronic superstore `round here in Florida) and order the GPX DVD player that they wanted...the one with all of the good features. This way there won`t be 2 separate delivery charges. I know many of you would be asking, "Why can`t you just load it up in the trunk and haul it home?". First off, as anyone knows, a 24-inch screen TV is too big to fit in any trunk and there is no way I would approve of having a DVD player in a car trunk in 88 degree weather.
As to the DVDs, here`s how it goes. Recently, my newspaper editor (I work part-time for a newspaper here...I write for their Teentime sections...movie reviews mostly) offered me 4 DVDs. Now 3 of them are not the best titles, but I decided that I would test out the DVD playerr with them. And if I don`t like them..I`ll use them as drink coasters. The titles are AntiTrust (That Ryan Phillippe movie about the computer genius who joins a mysterious computer corporation which doesn`t seem as it is..yada, yada, yada), Dude, Where`s My Car? (A movie I never wanted to see in my life, but I am taking a huge risk here. If this one is as bad as I think it is, I am going to bypass the "drink coaster" route and just light a match to it), Bachelor Party (A 1984 Tom Hanks film), and Rocky (Not the 5-pack, just the first one). The Rocky DVD does help because that knocks out one VHS to replace and 83 more to go.
As to how I am going to afford the rest, I found this wonderful website run by eBay (The auction company) called half.com which sells DVDs for bargain prices. If needs be, I will also go to amazon.com to see what they sell for used prices there. Then after all of that is completed (Which will probably take about 2 years once I get my job at Blockbuster or the movie theater near my house), I will sell off my VHS collection. Hey, as one of you said, maybe those VHS`s can be used for electricity.

Anyway, I just wanted to thank you all for replying.

Sincerely,

Rory L. Aronsky
