should we boycott nestle?

biglebowski (Elite) posted this on Friday, 11th February 2005, 14:16

I`m a student in cardiff university and last tuesday at the Student`s Union AGM the student body voted to ban all Nestle products from union shops on campus.

Now, i`m no expert on this but in essence this is because of their heinous practises in Third World countries, specifically with regard to their aggressive advertising of powdered baby milk.

This results in 1.5 million infants dying each year as a result of diarrhoeia contracted through contaminated drinking water. These deaths could be avoided if breast feeding were promoted as vigorously as powdered milk seems to be.

Now i can`t find any definitive evidence for this online. Anybody know anything about this. The Nestle website has a section on it, but as you`d expect, they say their squeaky clean.

Not of much help, but they`ve banned Nestle in the Student Union Shop at my University. :/

Oh my God, Bear is driving! How can that be?

I`ve not bought Nestle products since 1999.

You`ve got to wonder what grandmothers are telling their daughters about feeding - seriously, no-one`s said "It was good enough for you"?! But Nestle making a fortune out of the situation is disgusting.

Thanks for the info on this-its been at the back of my mind for some time and I try not to buy Nescafe but the brand is insidious isn`t it?

It is very difficult to get women to breast feed in this country (thanks to the Sun and all the other crap that is thrown about image etc)and in places where there is little clean water it is crucial to avoid milk powder.

A good way of acting is to write to your local supermarket and ask them to stop stocking Nestle products until they clean up their act.

I remember the university students used to picket Barclays because of their South African investments-I`m glad that students care enough to get involved. After all that is real politics not just party political stuff.

Or you could try farting against thunder ?
I`m all for action,where needed,but random solo acts like the above are just such a waste of time that they serve only to act as some kind of cathartic tool to the sender.

It reminds me of a Pete and Dud sketch.
The details are sketchy (sic) but it was about ( I think ) a fish restaurant owner on the yorkshire moors.
The owner (Peter Cook) was complaining that the war affected business,to which Dud replied;

"Yes,well I think the war inconvenienced quite a lot of people"

Only to get the reply;

"yes,but I wrote a letter"

:D

Time for the traditional `I disagree with Bowfer` post in 3...2.......

Is that seriously what you think? A) One man can make a difference (Ghandi, Nelson Mandella to name but a few) and B) If everyone thought like that nothing would get done and we would all be pathetic drones living our w***y homogenised lives being forcefed s*** by big business and our own governments (think GM crops).

Anyway.......My old Uni (well one of them....Derby) used to boycitt nestle products. The problem is Nestle`s tendrils are lodged in absolutely everything.

XFG, im not having a pop, upholding the boycott is v commendable, but youll be very very lucky if you havent bought a nestle product since `99.

If youve ever dyed your hair with L`Oreal hair dye or fed your cat GoCat then youve still stuffed money into their ever growing coffers.

Do you seriously think a single letter to your local supermarket will be met with anything other than a sigh,or perhaps a chuckle,then a lob into the bin ?
Setting up or joining an existing website,which will then lobby the supermarkets` head offices,is the sort of thing that is worthy and commendable,not random letter-writing that will do little other than make you look like any old random nutter/moaning minnie.
