Page 1 of The truth about the Wharfedale M5
General Forum
Hello everyone,
I am thinking about getting one of these feature packed, too good to be true for the price players.
If you have one or have seen one in action then please let me know what you thought/think of it.
I would be particularly intrested to know what the DTS sound is like from the onboard decoder.
Most important however, how good is the overall picture and sound quality.
http://www.area450.co.uk/wharfeyindex.htm is your first port of call.
Early reports aren`t too great as far as CD playback goes, and there have been a few DVD glitches too, sadly.
In case you weren`t aware the player is actually built by Sampo (model DVE360), and sadly it uses a different batch of firmware to the mainstream Sampo players.
However, if you can live without the DTS decoder, the Afreey LD2060 does exactly the same as the Wharfedale, and is only £149. And at least with this one you can disable Macrovision, as well as have access to the same features as the M5. Just doesn`t look quite as sexy, is all.
Check out http://www.area450.co.uk/currentavailability.htm for current stockists.
Incidentally, the M5 is now available online at Tesco for £170, which is a tenner less than the instore price, and includes free delivery.
