Electronic question for you boffins
I am going to fit a hifi system in my brothers car that he bought abroad, but its a weird foreign electronic system, consisting of a headunit, two slim speakers & a bass speaker working through the amplifier, it works on a supply of 9V DC, 2A, total watts stated on the back is 20 W.
I am begining to wonder if there is a 12V / 9V supply convertor missing from the package.
If I connect it up to the standard 12V car system through a 2A fuse, will I fry the components ?
If I can`t, Is there an easy way of dropping the voltage down from the cars 12V to the 9V `s required?
Cheers, as I am utterly flumoxed with this one :/
RE: Electronic question for you boffins
you can buy a voltage dropper best place to look would be maplins strange how it is only 9 volts all cars either 12 or 24v depending on wiring system etc i would try a lower fuse in it a 1a quick blow and dont turn it up too far for test stage :/

I find this strange that it could be 9V too, but wiring it to 12V, even with a lower fuse could be costly.
The fuse will blow if the *ampage* is exceeded, but not necessarily the voltage, so if it has voltage sensitive components, but only gets, say, a half amp connection, the 12V could do damage (although, it`s unlikely!)
Two things to check:
Is it actually 9V and not "9V minimum" ?
Is it a well known manufacturer who, although they might not provide physical service, might provide email tech support to let you know how to proceed?
BTW, Maplin woulda been my suggestion for a voltage dropper too :D

You can buy a voltage regulator from maplin part number "UJ55K" priced about 60 pence it will drop the voltage from 12 to 9 , it is fairly easy to connect, it will have three connections input, common and output. good luck!

And there you have, if nothing else, peace of mind for under a quid! :D
Well done that man ;)

Thanks all you guys, Its definately 9V, totally weird, thanks for the warning on Volt sensitive equipment.
I am now going to buy that `volt dropper` Maplin component mentioned above, to sort it out, cheers :)

If you want to waste a £1.00 then may I suggest a lottery ticket....something tells me that the voltage regulator is not the answer... :)
