Despite the merits of the countryside and other cities, London is still the place to be! Discuss

I do like these forums, but there is an awful lot of London Bashing on here. You seem to have a hatred for your Capital City that makes no sense. The French love Paris, The Americans have respect for Washington - but apparently only Londoners and Foreign Tourists like London. Why? mainly because the rest of the UK is jealous of the money generated (and spent!) in London - I know it`s difficult to understand but the Olympics wouldn`t have a leg to stand on if we were Newcastle, Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham or Swansea 2012 - there is just no International Recognition around the world for that. London is recognised as a World City, one of the top financial centres on the planet! it is also known for its Galleries, Museums, Sights and Restaurants.

As people of the UK you have to proud of your Capital - because in your efforts to stay jealous you undermine the economy and tourism of the country.

I love London
I love visiting the place
However,I can`t see how anyone could possibly live there without being seriously loaded.
It must be nightmare to have so much to do and no money to do it with !
If I had any complaints it`s that everything stops way too early.
We`re not nightclub people,so after 11pm we invariably trudge back to the hotel. :/

So, playing devil`s advocate here, why was it that Manchester was picked to host the Commonwealth Games?

It seems to me that unless the government is prepared to spend a LOT of money bringing public transport and facilities in London up to scratch, there`s not a hope in hell of seeing off Paris and New York and whoever else is up for 2012. And seeing how much debt the Greeks have got themselves into in order to host this year`s Games, do you really think that it`s a sensible use of taxpayers, and more especially London council taxpayers, money.....?

(I`m a Midlander by birth and upbringing but moved up to Manchester a couple of months back, so I hasten to add that I`m not ringing Manchester`s bell through any personal allegiance!)

I have to say that London is a busy enough place already without adding thousands more tourists to it with the games (2012).
I cannot see how we have the space or transport facilities to host the event.
As a London commuter (live within the M25 but towards the outside of it) I know how stressful the transport can be, adding thousands more people to it without seriously upgrading the facilities would be stupid.

I know that the mayor & co are pledging billions of pounds of investment into transport - but where`s the money coming from? That`s right...they`re putting up fares by some ridiculous amount. Prepay bus fares from 70p - £1 !!! (that`s a 42% rise FFS!!)

Having said all that, I probably earn 40% more working in London than I would outside of the capital....so providing I can put up with the hassles that come with it, then it`s worth it!

PS - oh yeah there`s also loads of benefits of being here...like the numerous attractions, sights and pubs etc :D

Beer?? I thought us "Southerners" drank shandy? :D:D

And I kind of have the best of both worlds since I work in the centre but live outside of London really (10 mins from the Dartford Crossing) - and I have a field behind the house...so lots of green stuff :)
