As with airlines, book early if possible - the cheapest tickets generally have to be booked 7 or 14 days in advance.

Also, if your son is 26 or younger (or a full-time student) he can buy a "Young Person`s Railcard", which costs £20 for a year and entitles him to a 33% discount on most fares.

Trainline is usually the best one IMO, gives a range of times& fares available.
