Why do I keep getting messages from PayPal ?

Fitz (Elite) posted this on Wednesday, 21st January 2004, 09:20

The title says it. PayPal are sending me e-mails quoting things like: Quote:
"To avoid suspension of your account you have to reactivate it by providing us with your personal information.

To update your personal profile and continue using PayPal services you have to run the attached application to this email. Just run it and follow the instructions."
AFAIK I haven`t got an account with PayPal, so it sounds like a scam to me and I`ve deleted the messages without opening the attachment. Anyone else had this happen ?

Yeah..has happened to me twice. It`s a scam, and all they want is to use your info for nefarious purposes. As usual, `tis always best to delete emails you`re unsure of before testing any attachments.

OK, thanks Alan. Must admit I was in two minds about whether or not to open attachment, as I have used PayPal as a third party when I`ve ordered something from a site that didn`t have their own secure system. Still, got it right for once. Seems that someone is pretending to be PayPal. :(

Varients of this scam are currently doing the rounds for those that use e-banking Lloyds, Natwest etc.

The attachment usually links to a website that to a casual glance appears to be to the service, towards the end of the long stream of characters making up the there is a (known issue with IE) redirector command (sometimes hidden I beleive) to a fake but convincing website, where you give them all your account details & passwords.

If in doubt always type the front end of the url ie www.paypal.com only.

The PayPal scam e-mail often has an attachment which will then connect to a site and download a known virus, cf:-

just got email from Paypal saying:
Quote:
You are receiving this notification because PayPal is required by law to send you your account statements. Your quarterly online statement for the PayPal account registered to ...... my email address

with links to loggin on/history/account overview

The thing is I deleted my details about two months ago so how come I`m still getting them?

Cheers for advise. I`ll delete them - as don`t need paypal anymore.

there are similar emails doing the rounds claiming to be from Ebay and also asking for your password, username, credit card details. i have received about 3 of them. delete them and do not open the attachment.
