IMAX Birmingham goes bust ?

Dan Bates (Admin) posted this on Monday, 5th January 2004, 10:40

The Times today says that the IMAX in Birmingham is closing after making a £600k loss last year.

That would be a great shame, as the IMAX experience is truly amazing. However, it must be said that they could do with getting more current release movies, and also dropping the prices a bit more...

Absolutely. I`ve only ever seen one IMAX movie and that was "The Dream is Alive" at the IMAX at the Kennedy Space Center. It was really mind blowing. Quite funny too, as part of the astronaut training shows a rocket sled type thing as viewed by the occupant. The vehicle comes to a sudden stop and the whole audience surge forward in their seats, (followed by embarassed laughter).

I was pretty underwhelmed when seeing Reloaded at the Bristol IMAX - ordinary sound & constantly distracted by various bugs that were projected along with the film on to the screen. However i`ve heard the screens elsewhere are much bigger?

My mate David works for IMAX Melbourne, which isn``t likely to close down any time soon. He used to work at IMAX Brisbane which they did close down.

I think they are slowly closing the least profitable ones.

I`ve been to IMAX Birmingham to see The Matrix Reloaded and I must admit I was impressed by the screen size and the 3D trailers they showed before the movie, but the film itself... I wasn`t really impressed. The sound was ordinary and the movie didn`t look that much bigger because its a 2.35:1 movie projected on a 4:3 screen.

It should be pointed out that even though the screen is more square than oblong, the film wasn`t cropped to 1.33:1 (4:3). It resembled more like 1.66:1, well this is what it looks like at the superb bfi IMAX. Matrix Revolutions looks and sounds good.

The problem with the IMAX in b`ham was that it was at millenium point which, in terms of the city, is the arse end of nowhere. Its a 20 minute walk from the town center and wasnt too easy to get to by public transport. I went to see the lion king there once and it was dead. And b`hams got a bad ass UGC too. And an odeon next to the bull ring....

Out of curiosity, how much is a ticket at these IMAX theatres?

It depends on what you want to see. Matrix Revolutions costs a whopping £12.50!! Others cost about £7.50. It`s a spectacle event..at least this is this is how I rationalised it.

Ticket prices here.

F-ing hell, a bit of a rip off if you ask me. I saw IMAX when I was in America, and it is big (and loud :D ) but I couldn`t think of a good reason to spend that much on it. Although if you go only now and again (twice a year?) then it`s not too bad. But scandalous next to UGC`s Card ;) 8)
