Do we have any DRUMMERS in the house?

dusty321 (Elite) posted this on Wednesday, 4th December 2002, 18:24

After many months of practice and huge amounts of money ive finally cracked it and am now ready to start playing to the few old fella`s down the local club on a sunday afternoon with (the band) and trying to make enough pennies to cover the beer bill.

Now here`s the question..... Anyone can pick up a drum kit for around £195 nothing special but it would do the trick for small venues but its gonna be a pain when its time to pack the gear away, NOW ive been looking at the Arbiter Flats Lite drum kit which takes very little time to setup - pack away and thay use very little space, but from what ive seen thay dont look very much like your gonna get great sound out of them, (I havent had the pleasure of trying them out) though I maybe wrong?

Is there anyone out there who had used this type of drum kit for any type of gig, id be grateful for some advise, pro`s and con`s etc.....!

Cheers.

Yip - I play regulary in a band here in sunny Northern Ireland (and no, it`s not one of those bands that you see marching up and down the roads during the summer!).

I`ve been playing for about 16 years and my experience of the type of `HipGig` kit you describe is that they lack a lot of volume and sustain. You would maybe need to mike the kit to counter this. I wouldn`t let the time it takes to set up and dismantle the kit to influence the type of kit I wanted to buy. I`ve always found that I have my kit set up and ready to go long before the guitarists are ready and I`m packed up and enjoying another pint at the end of the night whilst the others are still struggling with the modest P.A. we use.

Also, I would shy away from a kit at £195. You would be better off spending £300 on a decent second hand kit (e.g. Pearl Export, Premier APK) with cymbals and cases etc. It may not look flashy and new but, unless it`s had some serious damage it will last far longer and sound far better than the new kit at £195.

Hope this helps. Whatever you do, you`re sure to enjoy yourself. Getting paid for bashing the drums is about as good as it gets.

Cheers

Agreed. Flats I have played on sound bad. Once you have put up and taken down a `proper` kit half a dozen times it is second nature. especially if you have it marked up with tape for cymbal height etc. it will hardly take any time.

Thanks guy! Thought this thread had gone un-answered.

Decided to take your advise and go for a Pearl kit though the price made me cry it sounded `Very` nice and should serve me well over the years all being well!
