So first impressions...

Setup hit a .NET installation snag (no error message, had to go hunting in event viewer to even find what the issue was) which I fixed by uninstalling and reinstalling .NET 4.7. Nice one Microsoft, thanks Oculus for going with that pile of poo.

Once over that, installation and setup was very easy, then you get a small collection of experiences (which I can't see anyway to view again other than googling and discovering I need to download Oculus Dreamscape to watch them and more a second time), which get increasingly breathtaking until the last one which is very, how you say... Jurassic Parky.

SPOILER:
You are inside a large building, a T-rex comes around the corner and up to you, roars, comes closer, then walks over the top of you. It really is a wow moment, if anything could slap you around the face with the potential of VR, it's this.

The screen door effect is a bit dissappointing, in this day and age of retina displays it's a shame they can't up the resolution to remove it.

But the zero lag is just incredible, it's all very immersive, very, very immersive. In a way that watching 3D movies is not.

Pinball FX 2 VR is really good, even though the table resolution looks lower in the headset than on the screen, it's just so convincing. The only table that you can currently get that I really like is Epic Quest, which I really do love, the rest are interesting but no other of my favourites are available, would love one of the Star Wars tables to be included.

I tried Race the Sun, which I think I got in a Humble Bundle once, it was okay but a bit dull, the 3D adds nothing to it really. Game plus VR does not always equal cool or fun or even interesting.

Project Cars was amazing and puke-inducing at the same time, the vibration from the road is so much more noticeable with a VR headset than on a monitor. There is apparently something you can do about that but I'll try it another night.

Had a few controller issues, things feel a bit buggy in that regard, you are looking at a vista like say in Google Earth VR and it says Press A to Continue, and you press A on the controller and nothing happens. This also happend in Pinball FX 2 and when I lifted the headset I clicked on the window and it then worked. This can be frustrating.

Putting on the headset with glasses is a nightmare, it's fine once on, but not easy or always pain free.

I'm busy now till Sunday so I won't be able to try anything else yet, though then I'll look at Elite Dangerous and Flight Sim X, since they'll both be used with my Saitek flightstick.

A third party piece of software called FlyInside is what brings it to FSX and from watching a few YouTube videos this looks really good. Finally making use of the 3D virtual cockpits.

What I don't have yet is the hand controllers, these won't arrive till Monday due to Amazon stock issues. I think these may be useful for Keep Talking...

Prefer a Vive? Permanent price drop just happened:

Quote:
According to O’Brien, this price cut is not a reaction to the Oculus sale or price drops. “We plan out our pricing and margins and life cycle planning a year plus in advance,”

The evidence based side of my brain is saying, ok, the other side is saying, sure it is, sure it is!

Think this is still way more expensive than the Oculus atm.

Got a third sensor today, and it reminded me one thing that has really impressed me all the way through with the Oculus, and I have no idea if the Vive is the same maybe it is, but anyway...

You know how you buy a printer and then discover when you open the box the cheapskates didn't give you a printer cable? And you'd buy a console and then have to fork out for a memory card? Or a new Macbook and need a dongle just to plug it into an ethernet switch?

I've not really had to do that with the Rift. The base Oculus Rift came not just with a remote plus batteries, but also a wireless XBox controller and USB interface for it. The touch controllers also came with duracell batteries, another sensor and some thing you are supposed to need for Guitar Hero or something.

And this third sensor which is for 360 sensing, it came with a really long active USB 2 extension cable.

They really have gone out of their way to make sure you have everything you need without ordering more bits. And the games they give you free are hours of fun.

Looks like the Summer of Rift will be over in a few days:
https://uploadvr.com/sept-5th-buy-rift-touch-399/

Quote:
The big sale is finally coming to an end as the Oculus Rift and Touch bundle will raise to a standard price of $499 starting at 12:00AM PT on Tuesday, September 5th, 2017. That means you have until 11:59PM PT on Monday, September 4th, 2017, to take advantage of the $399 price.

If you are a big fan of traditional FPS, fighting and driving games, you are probably not missing much.

But if you have always embraced new ways to game, such as the Wii remotes, Samba de Amigo maracas, Gamecube bongo drums, etc, I'd recommend it if you have the dispensable cash lying around.

I'm seriously considering building a dedicated PC for the living room so I can take advantage of room scale games.

After going back up in price, it's now down to £399 permanently. \o/

Competition is great for consumers, and we’re seeing a blistering price war in the VR world that’s driving down prices rapidly. Oculus’ announcement at Oculus Connect 4 is the latest salvo in that war: the Rift bundle--which includes the headset, sensors, six free apps, and Touch controllers--is now, permanently, just $399.
