f you want to play with another machine in the same vicinity - do you need to each have a copy of the game? `coz I can`t get them to connect whatever I do!!

Yup, that`s my understanding - although I gather (at least with some games) that it`s possible to boot up on PSP, eject the UMD and run it in the second and THEN search for others to play against wirelessly - then you can do it with only one game between you. No idea whether it actually works, from personal experience but I`ve seen a number of references to it in different places.

Not all games require all users to own a copy of the game.

This is the same with link play on the DS too.
