Please help me to set up X-Box live!

Nina (Elite) posted this on Wednesday, 20th October 2004, 23:32

OK so with Halo 2 coming out very soon I want to be all hooked up and ready to go for X-Box live :D but the thing is I don`t have a f-ing clue where to begin. :(

I am on BB, have an X-Box, I swear I remember reading somewhere about having to buy, is it a router? or something. Do you have to buy some sort of kit? What speed do you need to have? I`m on 512kbps, will I have to upgrade my speed? And finally, how does it work, I mean playing with people all over the world? Is there like a set time that everyone connects or something?

Sorry if the questions seem silly, I really don`t know where to get started and know you guys are very knowledgable ;)

Hi Nina

you don`t necessarily have to buy a router, you can connect the xbox directly
to your pc if you wish (though you`ll need to install a second NIC into the pc
if you`re using ethernet to connect to BB, otherwise if you`re using USB to connect
to your modem as long as you have a spare network connection on your pc you
can connect directly to that)

a router would be the best option though, cos you won`t have to have the pc switched
on to get your a** fragged:-)

have a look at the official xbox website for compatible routers.

not too sure about this, but if you choose a router you may have to set up the DMZ
(demilitarized zone) to allow gameplay....as i said though i`m not too sure!!

no doubt WRabbit will shed some light upon this for us :D

Ste.

...is that gasoline I smell?

Oh ok. I was just going to say that if you were with Telewest, for £35 you get all the necessary equipment, a game and Xbox Live for 12months. Thats how I got myself set up - its very simple. :D

I was asking for the same advice a few weeks ago and one of the writers to the forum told me to:

Buy a network card for your PC/laptop for about £10/£20.

And get an ADSL modem and router like the Netgear DG834.

Better than USB as it doesn`t use system resources and has a built in firewall.

I took this advice and it works like a dream and is really easy to set up. The Netgear modem/router was about £60 and well worth it.

Hope this helps.

I was trying to get on xbox Live .. The PC sharing is just a joke. IT IS SO DAMN DIFFICULT to get to work even microsoft say in not so many words, "Don`t Bother.

I am on 512 kbps Broadband from BT Yahoo and it works just fine, some games have Lag (XIII) and sometimes the "Top spin" tennis game, but it`s not common and isn`t worth worrying about. Xbox Live really is amazing ! My other half can use the phone and internet and I play on xbox live AT THE SAME TIME with NO loss of speed! It`s mad :-)

Xbox live uses a "Gamertag" system, whereby you can log buddies into your xbox and see when they are online, and they can see you as well. Xbox Live , as it`s a Global thing, means there is always someone out there on-line to play with.. no matter what the time of day.

Here`s what I did. I got me one of

These routers

and 15 meters of

this cable because the xbox is downstairs and the PC upstairs

and I got my xbox Live kit from

here

the router just plugs into a USB port (And the company I`ve linked to.. PRE configures it! SO you literally plug it in and GO!), plug your broadband cable in the back of the router as well then the Cat 5 ethernet cable plugs into the router too and then into the back of the xbox.

BAM! your on line. The longest part of the process is the xbox live sign in. Make sure you have plenty of space on your xbox for the updates it`ll do whilst registering. Mine was so crammed full of music and game saves I had to back up to a memory card..

The Grand total for router, cable and xbox live pack was around £120

hope this has helped.

Check out my link for the gamertag database below, get signed on and I`ll see you onHALO 2!!!!!!

PS.. be careful when choosing your Gamertag..as your stuck with it for the duration of your subscription
