XBOX Live - Router Advice Needed

BADMOFO (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Sunday, 29th August 2004, 14:27

I would be grateful for your advice. I have Wanaddo Broadband which is a USB Modem. I only Have USB connections on my PC not Ethernet.

I would like to connect to Xbox Live and also still be able to use my PC for internet access.

I understand that I need a router but because my modem is USB I don`t seem to be able to find what I need as all the routers I`ve looked at seem to have Ethernet connectivity only.

I rang Wanadoo who advised me to buy there Wannadoo Home wireless set up but I don`t really need it to be wireless as I can use cables quite easily.

Hope someone can help.

Thanks

Buy a network card for your PC/laptop for about £10/£20.

And get an ADSL modem and router like the Netgear DG834.

Better than USB as it doesn`t use system resources and has a built in firewall.

Thanks for the response. Another question, sorry. Do you know if it is a simple process to get the Netgear Modem/Router working to connect to the internet after I have plugged it in, and stopped using the Modem Wanadoo sent me?

Thanks again.

Pretty straightforward.

You connect your PC to the router using a network cable.

Connect the router to your ADSL.

Make sure you`re using DHCP on your network card, and then log into the router using 192.168.0.1.

There`s a setup wizard or you can set it up manually. All you should need is your username and password from Wanadoo.

I had EXACTLY the same problem as you as I had an internal Broadband modem.

Internet connection sharing after 3 hrs of sweat and frustraion was a joke and impossible. SO

I got myself a Speedtouch 530 router. The online store pre-configured it for me too! I plugged it into the USB, plugged in the DSL cable, plugged in the ethernet to the XBOX, slapped the CD in the PC so XP could recognise it whereupon it said "this is already configured" and in 2 mins was signing up to XBOX LIVE!! I can`t recommend the speedtouch highly enough. SO simple to set up!

Oh, and as a handy hint.. Leave it on all the time.

Thanks for that. I`ve just ordered the Netgear Modem/Router for £61 and also bought a network card so I`m hoping i can get it all working in the next couple of days. I`ll let you know how I get on.

Thanks again for the advice.
