shedaisy (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Wednesday, 26th March 2003, 16:32

hi, my ps2 won`t play discs anymore. it just goes to browser/system config. bit all the time like it doesn`t have a disc in the machine. i`ve checked config. and looks okay. it reads the memory card no problem. just wondering if anyone else has had this problem, is it something major? worth repairing? its over a year old so do i phone sony to recommend a local repairer? thanks for any feedback.

Is your PS2 chipped? I had a problem like that myself, and fixed it by removing the casing of the PS2, taking the lid off of the DVD drive, cleaning the laser eye (with the machine switched off) and pushing the laser as close as I could get it to the centre of the drive where the disc sits.

That may not work for everyone though, and so I would recommend contacting the retailer, although they may just say ring Sony anyway. Its up to you really, but PS2`s are renowned for this kind of problem. A large majority of them tend to break like this. Simply searching on the Internet confirms this!

Yeop, the good old laser eye problem, tends to occur in quite a lot of PS2`s, mine included. When mine died a few months ago I had a look at the cost of getting it sorted and ur looking at around £60, funnily enough Sony`s warranty wont cover it. Plenty of websites or second hand game shops are usually able to sort it or alternatively u can do what I did and take it down to a non-local GAME and trade it in! :D You get around £75 for it so the extra for a new PS2 aint much more than the cost of getting the laser eye replaced!

This happened to my mate, but he didn`t want to wait for the repair so this is what he did. He bought a brand new one out of Argos, took the new one out of the box and put the old broken one in it and took it back for a full refund. It worked a charm.

Point to note though, they check that everything is in the box before you get a refund, so if you have a PS2 with a scatched exterior, it might not work. But if my PS2 ever gets busted, I`ll be taking a trip down to Argos.

That would be a case of fraud!

"That would be a case of fraud!"

PS2`s are prone to `dirty lasers` due to the fact that the fan sucks air through the whole system and leaves dust on everything inside. Try a laser cleaner and if that fixes it then start leaving the PS2 standing up. Dust has a hard time sticking to stuff that way!

thanks for replies. i`ll try laser cleaner but i`m not hopeful that will work. knowing my luck i`m going to have to buy a new one. i do already have a ps2 stand so it has always been upright. the ps2 is used by kids who leave discs lying on floor so maybe it is just dirt inside. i see plenty of faulty ps2`s on ebay so i`ll probably put it on there and hopefully get some money for it.
