Expansion Slot for PS2

Does anyone know what the Expansion slot on the PS2 is for? Behind the lid, is any empty space which takes up about half the console!

Um...my guess is that the expansion slot is there for expanding the PS2 hardware.

Seriously, I think it is there for add-ons such as the hard drive, modem etc. that Sony have said are coming out. Plus of course any other accessory that is needed for certain features no doubt.

Yeah, it is used for hardware expansion, the US have got them already. Sony do a Linux kit for it, which is a hard drive, and a network adapter, along with USB keyboard and mouse. The US also use the network adapter to allow some games to communicate over the internet a la X-box Live.
