Don't Look Up (Netflix)

Pete-MK (Elite Donator) posted this on Friday, 31st December 2021, 18:49

This is getting a lot of attention recently, and hopefully for the right reasons, and it's polarising opinions, largely depending on who's watching it.

Short synopsis, Lennifer Lawrence's haircut spots a new meteor out in space. Leonardo DiCaprio's fatsuit figures out that it's on a collision course with earth, and we've got about 6 months intil it hits. So far, so Armageddon/Deep Impact.

Where this one differs is the terrifyingly realistic way in which the news is first reported, then dealt with by the also-realistic-if-we're-talking-about-the-last-guy President, played perfectly by Meryl Streep, with props to Jonah Hill, playing her completely inept but powerful by nepotism son, more interested in likes & subs than saving the planet.

It is funny, but for all the wrong reasons, because every time someone does something that 10 years ago would seem ridiculous, but you take a second look at it and realise yes, that's EXACTLY what would have happened.

Of note are Mark Rylance, almost unrecognisable as an Elon Musk/Jeff Bezos/Zuckerbeg-bot hybrid SPOILER:
who initially halts the first rescue mission after he finds out that the material the meteor is made of could make him even richer, so he compiles a plan to harvest the meteor instead of destroying it.
Also, Ariana Grande pops up as a vacuous teeny-bopper whose on/off relationship with some guy is initially deemed much more favourable news & infinitely more exciting than the planet's impending doom.

Like I said, terrifyingly realistic.

Would recommend. Stick around for two post-credits scenes as well

Not sure why Jennifer Lawrence's part has been reduced to/referred to as a haircut or DiCaprio a fatsuit but thought both were great in it - as they all were.  However, I agree with everything you've said.
The first post-credits scene is especially good.
I do think that if you ask 'many' people what the film is about they will say a comet crashing towards earth and totally not see the allegory of the comet/impending climate disaster...  Those people will also probably think the film was 'OK', rather miss the point and be surprised at the ending....

I found it really hard to get into, Di Caprio and Lawrence were great, but  the film I thought suffered from not knowing what it was.

so it wants to be Black Mirror, meets Armegeddon, but then part of the black comedy goes a bit too Brass eye, shame as I'd happily spend an evening watching one of those 3 :(
