Raging Bull: Anyone else left disappointed ?

Brian Elliott (Reviewer) posted this on Thursday, 7th March 2002, 23:47

Hey guys,

I`ve just finished watching the Director`s Cut version of Raging Bull (Robert De Niro), and can`t help but feeling a little underwhelmed. I`m usually a big fan of the get-inside-the-head-of-the-character films (Apocalypse Now & Taxi Driver are my favourite examples of this), but this was not as good as I had anticipated from the reviews.

Anyone feel the same about this film ?

Not sure I`d heard of a Director`s Cut version of this film, do you by any chance know what was different about this version?

I do agree that this film is ridiculously overrated, with the obscenely shallow performance of De Niro as Jake La Motta being one of the most baffling `classics` of all time. Perhaps the problem is that since this is a (to use your phrase) "get-inside-the-head-of-the-character" film, there`s not much in the head of a repressed misogynist like La Motta; so Scorsese et al inevitably fill out the movie with endless stylised physicality and monotonous shock value.

Hey guys,

Apologies for saying "Director`s Cut", I don`t know where I`ve got that from !!

I really just meant Special Edition (2 disc, Region 2)

The 2 disc R2 version isn`t a SE it was just a 20th Anniversary reissue of the old disc with a second disc with extras (2 of the extras are hidden)

The R1 SE is due later this year.

I too didnt find anything special about this film. overated. Im sure there are many better movies around. The plot is kinda dull. The acting is pretty cool but u cant let a film rely purely on acting. there are other elements as well.
So bear, you`re a big planet of the apes 2001 fan are you? there are reviews at imdb and im sure there must be some on this site. personally i thought Its not that good but im sure you will like it.

No it is so bad and to be honest it`s so bad that I can`t find the right words to describe it, but if you have read any of Mikes film reviews then you will know he is the man!...It is truly a terrible film.

yeah mike`s `the man`...the man you can count on to spout pretentious vague nonsense, who needs to learn how to ENJOY a film.
Raging Bull is one of my, and 99% of film lovers, favourite films.
