STARGATE - Region 2 DIRECTORS CUT

NeoMorpheus (Harmless) posted this on Wednesday, 31st October 2001, 00:42

Has anybody else found a problem with this disk during Chapter 2 at about 6mins 8sec. Prior to this time the subtitles are placed in the black bars below the picture on my 4:3 tv. Picture quality is excellent.
However at this point two further black bars appear (greyish as apposed to black) within the masked off area & the substitles appear within the picture itself.
The picture quality is also drastically reduced, as bad if not worse than VHS.
At the start of Chapter 3, 6min 47sec, the film returns to normal.
Excellent picture, solid black bars etc.
I have tried comparing this to my original, region 1 copy of stargate however this section appears to be previously unused footage & does not appear in the earlier release.
I have a Yamaha 796 DVD player.
Is this a fault with my machine/setup or has an error been made in production/pressing?

I have the region 1 directors cut and I have not noticed any quality problems with the video in the extra sections. I do not normally use subtitles but I can turn them on and see if its a generic problem or just a region 2 one.

I didn`t notice this problem on my Region 2 check disc that I reviewed. I`ll take another look at it this evening.

I have also definitely noticed this. It happens as you say, at 6:08 secs into the film. The quality of this section is very poor and looks worse than a VHS print. But don`t worry, you are not alone in noticing this. It is defintely apparent. I don`t know how anyone has not noticed this.

I have just checked the HOMECINEMACHOICE web site. I sent an e-mail
to John ARCHER at HCC at the same time I posted this article.

Several people have confirmed that they too have the problem.
Apparently the Region 1 disc does not suffer with this problem as it was mastered in the US using a superior branching system. Momentum Pictures (region2) does not have the facilities to master a DVD using the same system and there is apparently a two year wait to use those in the US.
The footage is of poor quality as they have inserted it in the film without cleaning it up, as a directors cut, but don`t give the option of playing the film without. It is also very strange that they did not give it the same treatment as the rest of the film.
HCC will hopefully be making further enquires as to why the UK dvd fans get ripped off/stuck with yet another poor DVD in comparisons to our US cousins
