remastered james bond dvds

A mate of mine has the full collection of bond dvds. They are the first set, the ones with the 007 and gun logo across all the spines of the cases. He is after replacing them with the new remastered discs. Whats the difference between the original collection and the new remastered collection? Extras ? Quality ? etc.

Aswell as many new extras, some very significant, including Moore commentaries on all his films, the main thing is that the quality (especially on the early ones) is breathtaking.
There`s simply no comparison.
The later movies are not such marked improvements but they are better.
And all 20 films are now with a choice of 5.1 in either DD or DTS.
This really opens up the movies and lets you hear them properly.
On another site some pedantic nitpickers have complained that the original mono is not offered.
With DTS 5.1 on there, who cares?
Goldeneye ,LTK and TND are also uncut for the first time on R2.
With the BOGOF promotion effectively pricing them at £6 each, you`d be a fool to miss out

Sorry don`t know what the difference is, but thought this might be of interest. Complete 40 DVD set for £149 from HMV - it`s the cheapest I`ve seen, unless there`s a catch?

from HMV Not sure whether to post it in Bargain Buckets as well. Release date 20.11.06

Presumably people who want to hear the film the way it originally sounded? Multi-channel remixes aren`t always a good thing (just look at The Terminator or the new A Nightmare on Elm Street disc), and not including the original Mono is akin to altering the aspect ratio - I`m sure a lot of people would complain if they did that.

I agree with Chris. It would have been no extra effort for them to just stick the original mono track on. Most films do it...I think?

I disagree most of the time.
The 5.1 mixes on the Bond films are excellent so apart from the pedants nobody cares about listening to a crowded mono track .
The new mixes allow you to pick up sounds much clearer than ever before.
I do agree that some 5.1 mixes don`t work.
Most of the UK Anchor Bay mixes of old horror stuff ,like the Amicus set and The Amazing Mr Blunden are not that good.
However, some of the Bond films offer 3 commentaries and a choice of DD and DTS so thats 5 audio tracks already so I can see why they would not want to waste any precious remaining space to deplete whats there for video by also supplying a mono track that very few are bothered about.
When it comes to restoration the companies are removing specks, hairs and other such stuff that they could not remove at the time so should that remain there too.
Disney classics are being presented on dvd in flawless quality that is way off what cinemagoers saw over 50 years ago---is that also a sin?
I think anything that improves the film is ok.
Changing the ratio and colorisation for example are not improvements

Removing dirt and stuff from films isn`t the same as remixing a soundtrack. Release prints may get dirty but they were never intended to be that way, so cleaning them up is simply restoring them to their former glory.

I`m not totally against remixes for older films - far from it, as they can be amazing (Superman: The Movie) - but I like the original Mono/Stereo to be available. Pretty much every HK action flick I own sounds better in the original Mono than in the the crappy remixed 5.1. The same goes for many American films, like the aforementioned The Terminator, Jaws and RoboCop. The Terminator completely replaced certain sounds in the 5.1 remix, as did Jaws I believe. The recent 20th Anniversary Edition of Withnail and I had terrible Dolby and DT 5.1 remixes, but the original audio was fine.

If studios are worried about video bitrates they should cut out the DTS tracks, because there`s very little (if any) difference between DTS and Dolby, especially at the lower bitrates. Of course they won`t do that, because DTS is more `attractive` than the original Mono because people seem to think it`s vastly superior to Dolby (which it`s not).

Disappointingly true. Well, I say that, but I don`t have access to your collection... but almost every HK action 5.1 upmix I`ve heard is flatter than a fritter.

If he is a big fan then I would suggest he waits and makes do with his original box set because we all know that in a couple of years time a new box set will be released/rematered in High Definition..............If it was me I would wait. :)
