America`s finest-What are your top r1 discs?

Westy (Elite) posted this on Thursday, 23rd August 2001, 23:46

Hello all,Westyboy here.

Following on from Blazingmonga`s r2 disc fest, what are your most excellent region 1 titles? There`s more scope for goodies as there`s more to choose from.
Heres mine

Superman-The Movie(the 5.1 audio is worth it alone)
Twister DTS(not a week go`s by without this hammering the walls down)
A Bugs Life-Collectors Edition(seemingly forgotten 2 disc special edition of one of Disney and Pixars finest works)
And just for good measure,Saving Private Ryan DTS-for all the obvious reasons(plus the fact that its classic Spielberg)

Who`s next?

Hi,

Here I go:

T2 Ultimate Edition DVD - Audio, Video and Features 5 stars
Tarzan Collector`s Edition (2 DVDs) - Audio, Video and Features 5 stars - No DTS unfortunately
Almost Famous - Audio, Video and Features 5 stars
Die Hard 5 Stars Edition - Audio, Video and Features 5 stars
Seven Platinum Series - Audio, Video and Features 5 stars
The Road To Eldorado - Audio, Video and Features 5 stars
American Beauty - Audio, Video and Features 5 stars
Magnolia Platinum Series - Audio, Video and Features 5 stars - No DTS unfortunately
Apocalypse Now - Audio 4, Video 5 and Features 1 star - The transfer is very good
The Seven Year Itch - Audio 3, Video 5 and Features 3 stars - Amazing restoration makes delightful this adorable classic
Rear Window - Audio 3, Video 5 and Features 4 stars - Also looks beautiful and the mono sound doesn`t make too much of a difference in this kind of movie
The Bond Special Edition R1 is also one of my favorites - Audio, Video and Features 5 stars - almost always, since some of the oldies (like Goldfinger) doesn`t feature even stereo sound, but the sound is so rich it doesn`t dissapoint.

These are the best from my R1 collection. I believe animation looks specially beautiful on DVD, when the transfer is high quality. Tarzan and The Road To Eldorado are impressive on this media. My digital animation DVDs - Toy Story, Bug`s Life - are not R1.

Well, better stop by now or the list will go on and on and on.

Regards,

José Azevedo

By region 1 discs I mean discs you can only get on region 1 rather than ones which are 3 nanoseconds longer than an R2 version.....

Baraka - 70mm visuals man.....

Beastie Boys Anthology - Criterion

Hey! It was an honest mistake! I was tired ok! I had just got back from a hard days work..........dry eyes n`all that......

Pah!

Well anyway here I go:

Fight Club - Such a versatile disc! It has everything, not to mention a class film.

The Matrix - The most rewatchable film ever, in my opinion, and top quality A/V to boot.

The Shawshank Redemption - The DVD might not be the best in terms of extras but the film alone makes this disc worth it. A modern classic if ever there was one.

There! I did it! Hopefully correct aswell. Damn I must be getting old......

I only have 3 Region 1 DVD`s in my collection at the moment but the two that are particualy my favourite are as follows:

1. The Rock Criterion Edition - An Excellent Top Notch Film
2. Cliffhanger S.E - Much better than the Region 2 counterpart as its been slashed to bits - not just by a few seconds but by minutes at least. I even sold my R2 on ebay and bought the R1 for not much more from the US. An excellent Film.

I would of also like to get Fight Club Region 1 but the Region 4 version was much cheaper so it won.
