Page 1 of Raimi to re-make Evil Dead!
DVDs & Films Forum
Variety breaks the shocking news:
"Spider-Man 2" director Sam Raimi and original producing partners Rob Tapert and Bruce Campbell are reteaming to produce a remake of the cult hit "The Evil Dead" through Ghost House Pictures, the joint venture of Raimi, Tapert and Senator Intl.
Raimi wrote, directed and produced the 1981 "Dead," which tells of five twentysomething friends holed up in a remote cabin who discover a Book of the Dead. When an archaeologist`s taped translation of the text and its incantations is replayed, the youths unwittingly summon dormant demons that possess them.
Raimi will not direct the remake, so Ghost House is looking for a helmer to reinvent the franchise before a script is written.
Original pic spawned subsequent installments "Evil Dead II" and "Army of Darkness."
"Dead" will be fully financed by Senator Intl., which will hold worldwide rights to pic. Exec VP of motion pictures Nathan Kahane will oversee the pic for Senator.
" `The Evil Dead` is such a special film to Sam, Rob, Bruce and horror fans that we are going to take great care in renewing this franchise," said Joe Drake, Senator Intl. prexy. "By keeping its original formula intact and given audiences` appetite for horror, we expect that we`ll have a real hit on our hands."
Pic follows Ghost House`s first horror release, "The Grudge," which has grossed more than $100 million worldwide to date.
Senator and Ghost House are developing a sequel to "Grudge."
Other upcoming pics include "Dibbuk Box" from the Pang brothers; "Scarecrow"; "30 Days of Night," in partnership with Columbia; and "Boogeyman," to be released by Screen Gems in February."
Blimey! :o

I`m confused...I thought that Evil Dead 2 was supposed to be a re-make of sorts!!! :/ Looks like we`re going to get a second re-make. I have to admit to not being too confident.

Now you mention it,i seem to remember that being the story when ED2 was released.

What the f*** is the point in remaking Evil Dead if Raimi is not going to be directing?
His style and Bruce Campbell is what makes the Evil Dead films... well, Evil Dead films :D
Doing an Evil Dead film without Raimi is like doing a Robocop film without Paul Verhoeven... and look what happened there :o >:(

RE: Raimi to re-make Evil Dead!
Evil Dead 2 is basically a remake isn`t it, no matter what anyone says. Quite why they`re remaking it again is weird, but then I suppose with all the other old horrors like TCM and DOD, maybe its not so much of a suprise. It is a business after all!
Be interesting to see what they do with it; will it follow the comedy formula of the original? Or possibly go for an all out scare-fest?

Oh my God, Bear is driving! How can that be?
RE: Raimi to re-make Evil Dead!
I could be degrees off the mark here, but i always thought Evil Dead 2 was more of re-inagining - cum re-hash of Evil Dead - Like El Mariachi/Desperado, as opposed to a `remake`.
I can see it now, Paul Walker with a plastic chin.... *shudders*
But, if they do it properly, could be very, very good. I`m assuming there won`t be a new Ash, because that would be beyond diabolical! A DotD 2004 style makeover i could appreciate.

RE: Raimi to re-make Evil Dead!
Now bear with me, `cause this is a pretty radical idea!
Wouldn`t it be a better idea to use their time, energy, creativity and money to make a NEW Evil Dead film instead of making one that`s already been made!!?
Am I just insane or does that make sense to anyone else?

Probably. But it`s Hollyweird, man. Why come up with fresh new ideas, when you can re-hash old ones?

RE: Raimi to re-make Evil Dead!
The Evil Dead without Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell or the low budget charm and originality of the original - sounds like a non-starter to me. Will they keep in the `fake shemps`? 8)
