Is it just me or does the R2 Alien Quadrilogy look more and more like a very poor relation to the R1 edition.
Point 1 -
THE PACKAGING
REGION 1 - Gigantic digipack with brand new, exclusive, beautiful artwork plastered all over it!
REGION 2 - The same old egg artwork from the Alien poster, looks identical to just about every other Alien boxset that`s come before, inside we get some hideous yellow plastic disk trays and apparently NONE of the new artwork from the R1 set, also the booklet from the R1 set doesn`t appear to be there.
Point 2 -
THE AUDIO COMMENTARIES
REGION 1 - Every film has an audio commentary on both Theatrical & Special Editions.
REGION 2 - Commentaries on Theatrical versions only!!!
Now, I may be being naive here but why couldn`t we just get exactly the same set as Region 1?

Many have said the R1 packaging is crap, and the Amaray-in-a-book approach to R2 will be much better. Also, the commentaries aren`t just on the theatricals - I believe on Aliens and Alien 3 the commentary is on the EE only...yes, there is 1 commentary per film (as opposed to 2 - one for each version on R1), but you haven`t lost much.

Well I`m still going for the Region 1, if only to avoid the horrible Fisher f*cking Price day-glo Region 2 packaging.
The Region 1 set looks the way a set of this magnitude should look, the Region 2 looks like a 9 disc version of Scooby f*cking Doo! >:(

As someone who has the R1 set let me tell you, it`s a bit awkward messing around with the big digipack. I`d much rather have the `book` type packaging like the R2 and Smallville has so that I can, on a whim, select a disc of choice without needing to warm myself up to it first. You need space for the R1 box to open up! I prefer the quality of the discs of R1, but would personally prefer the R2 tray setup. I prefer the R1 box art too. Don`t get me wrong, I`m not complaining about it, just stating my preference. :D I`m just glad that I have it on my shelf, finding time to watch it all is another matter....!

I can appreciate that it`s not the most practical solution but it looks great, as a set of this scale should, the Region 2 just looks......sh*t.
Hey, I know it`s only the packaging but this is one of the biggest DVD releases ever and I believe it should look, you know, a bit special like. :)

Fair play straight. The R1 packaging is certainly breathtaking the first time you get your hands on it. :-)

Are the commentaries for each version of the movies in R1 different or the same with pauses or an extra bit? Just out of curiosity, want to get the best for my hard-earned cash! 8)
The X Files series are packaged the same as Alien Quad, and noone has complained about them. Personally I think its cool, cos you feel like you`re getting loads for your money.

As far as I know there is one commentary per film. Just because there maybe a commentary on both theatrical and extended versions on the R1 doesn`t mean we might miss out. Isn`t it possible that the theatrical versions contain shorter versions of the same commentaries - like the T2 Ultimate Edition had! If the R2 only has them on the longest versions we won`t be missing anything.
The R2 packaging does look a bit naff though.

The commentaries for R2 are as follows: -
Alien
Commentary on Director`s Cut
Aliens
Commentary on Special Edition
Alien 3
Commentary on Theatrical Edition
Alien Resurrection
Commentary on Theatrical Edition
Looks like there will be no problem with Alien and Aliens (Alien DC is only 1 minute shorter than the Theatrical version so don`t think there could be anything missing, Aliens SE is of course the longer cut). However with Alien 3 R2 misses out on approx 30 minutes of commentary which is present on R1 for the Special Edition. Alien Resurrection only has a few added scenes here and there so I don`t think the commentary on the R1 would be much different to R2.
