My wharfedale 750s wont play fantasia extra disc does anybody have the same problem is there a work around if not tesco can have it back and the player as well can the phillips 701 play mp3s and vcd thanxs

Its a similar problem to Toy Story and Gladiator (see threads).

I`ve just sent my set back as the extras disc won`t play on the Lecson DVD900. Nothing wrong with the machine, just crappy mastering by Disney. Getting the region 1 version instead which I reckon will be okay.

Having just phoned Wharfedale support (0845 601 2549) and then Disney Customer Enquiries (020-8222-1571) I have been told the following:

Wharfedale: "We are aware that there may be a problem with disk 3 of the Fantasia 3 Disk Set. This is because Disney in the US made the disk too big because everything in America is bigger - they did not stick the guidlines laid down. But no-one else has phoned us about it"


Disney: "The 750s does not have enough memory to handle disk 3. Wharfedale need to increase the memory on the machine. Similar problems were encountered with a Grundig player and Grundig made a memory upgrade available. To put the contents of Disk 3 onto disks that the 750s could handle would require 3 or 4 disks. The Disk has been tested for 9 months and it works fine. Disney have had lots of people with Wharedales phoning in and complaining."

Depressingly I got Chicken Run at the same time and although the movie plays OK, the animated menus very quickly corrupt and hang the player. Wharfedale seemed completely unaware of this and totally disinterested in my problem, whereas Disney were very understanding and sympathetic

All I can suggest is that people with the Fantasia Disks phone both Wharfedale and Disney and let them know that they are not happy and maybe Wharfedale will do something, especially given these lines from their web site :

"Our player is one of the most compatible machines on the market today and plays virtually every disc available. Nearly every DVD player you can buy has some problem or another with various discs. Our machine offers significantly better compatibility than most, including those costing many times more.

We are working closely with DVD mastering houses to ensure complete compatibility of present and future titles."

Sorry, but I don`t buy Disney`s response at all. There are plenty of players out there having problems with Fantasia and Toy Story. The problem looks the same as with Gladiator and Universal eventually owned up that they had cocked it up. If Disney tested this disk for nine months, on what did they test it? Certainly not on some of the biggest selling DVD players in the UK, nor on any of the three DVD players I own, none of which will play Disc 3, not even a straight, unconverted, Region 2 LG 2330P.

When I get the Region 1 version I`ll let you know if that works, but I know that those who bought the Region 1 Gladiator disc and the Toy Story set had no problems on players that fell over on the R2 versions. Disney couldn`t care less about this because they don`t want us buying Region 1 and neither do they like us buying cheap, Chineese DVD players that let us do so. So, if the disks don`t work because, as they claim, its the player thats at fault, then we`ll all be good little consumers and go out and buy much more expensive, DVD Consortium approved, Region 2 only machines.

As to Chicken Run. I`ve got it and have had no trouble with it on the Lecson, which is a Wharfie at heart, so I`m surprised you have problems with it. Could be a rogue disc. I`d try exchanging it for another copy and see if the problem persists.

But dont the mouse eared fools at Disney realise that its us people with the cheaper players who are making the market work by making it big enough to make releases worth while. I was in at the start with CD (with a CD-101) and before cheap players came out the catalogue was very small. Only when cheap players came out did the catalogue grow - and the companies started to clean up and release older material.

As for Chicken Run - I swapped the disk and it still goes wrong and dvdtimes bug reports show that other people are having problems with it.

The mouse-eared fools at Disney do not care less if their disks don`t play on our cheapie players for two reasons.

1. They`ve already sold you the disk and by blaming the manufacturers of the players they are still getting their money.
2. Region 2, or any other region for that matter other than Region 1, means nothing to them. The good ole US of A is where the market and the money is. Europe, and the UK in particular, are just side shows that make them some money, but are also often more trouble than they are worth.

Hollywood was not very keen to support the Region 2 market in the beginning and still only regards it as secondary to the US market. That`s why we have regional coding in the first place, to protect the US market. Its purely a matter of commerce.
