i have a multi region dvd player and a 32" widescreen tv which does pal and ntsc when i play a region 1 dvd in 2.35.1 the black bars top and bottom of the screen are larger.. less screen view than the same in a region 2 disc ,,is this caused by being in ntsc signal thanks

It depends how much bigger. Just because two films say 2.35:1 on the box, it doesn`t mean that they are both "exactly" the same ratio.
My best example is LOTR and AOTC. They both claim they are the same ratio, but LOTR is slightly wider, thus giving slightly bigger bars.
But on the PAL vs NTSC, it could be because NTSC has a lower resolution. Although I haven`t seen this before (I don`t buy R1 disc cause I HATE NTSC, but to each his own).
