Can anyone tell me the difference between VCD and movies on a CDR/RW?

I have been trying to get a recording of a film to work on my friend`s LG4210 DVD player but it won`t play it, even with a remote hack for VCD`s I tried.
Could someone please tell me the difference between VCD and CDR/RW recordings...thanx
