Back to the Future AUGUST release(?!?!) and cheapest price DVD`s challenge....

JamieM (Competent) posted this on Saturday, 29th June 2002, 01:10

Have seen the Back to the future Trilogy DVD set for sale at £17.99 on CD Wow, but am a bit confused by this, as the shot of the pack on DVD Reviewers` News page looks different to that on CDWow.com (although I realise the CDWow version is Australian I think). Is there any differences between the discs - I ask because this £17.99 price is a bargain, and if there`s no real differences, I`ll snap it up immediately.

Also, The Royal Tennembaums - great £12.99 price - is it a good film? What other films is it like?

Finally, can someone please supply me with the best places I can purchase the following DVD`s from for the cheapest price (bearing in mind I can ONLY pay via Switch card - and not buying off Ebay):

The Breakfast Club
The Terminator Special Edition (Region 1)
Star Wars Episode One
The Matrix & Matrix Revisted 2 box set
American Werewolf In London Special Edition
Dirty Dancing Special Edition (for the girlfriend I hope you understand :-) )

Any help is greatly appreciated - thankyou-

Not sure about the rest of them but Dirty Dancing Special Edition is available at www.futureent.com for £11.99. Details here: http://www.futureent.com/dvd/details.php?id=538

It`s also available at HMV for £9.99 but the cover looks different and I`m not sure if it`s the special edition?

The reason I know this? Am going to order it for the wife ;-)

The Royal Tenenbaums at cd-wow is the American version (I think), you can get the Canadian version at dvdsoon cheaper.

The R4 release will not have all the extra features that the R1 version is getting. R1 is released mid December.i`ve cancelled my order with CD Wow and am going to wait for the US release.

Thanks Andy. So the later December R1 release will include more extra features then? BUT the big question is, are these extra features worth the extra £18 you will need to pay for it ($55 instead of the cheaper £17.99 (£17.99 seems an amazingly low price for 3 Special Edition DVDs to me))???? Maybe it is actually worth my while purchasing the Aussy version for half the price, and accept a few features are absent?!?! Are the missing features really impressive, or just niggly little things?

Looks like there are extra commentries on R1 - R2 & 4 only have 1 commentry for film1, R1 has two comms for film1, and one for 2 and 3. Have a look here http://www.dvdcompare.org.uk/comparisons/search_results_page.php?searchtype=letter&param=B - each of the films is listed seperately, but it`s the trilogy.

Ah yeah - had a look, and you are right, there are some pretty worthwhile extras only present on the R1 version (due mid December) - including extra deleted scenes, commentaries, making ofs etc. Why do they do this - features only availbale on Region 1 - is it just to really annoy us? I thought the idea was that DVDs would basically be the same across the globe?!?! Why give R1 the best deal, and why leave it until the end of the year? Does anyone have any clue how much the R1 version will really cost when its released, because if it is this £36 price tag, then the Aussy version looks inviting at £18 (cheaper and comes out much sooner). Any ideas?

I think there are sometimes licencing issues with different distributors having rights to different material, but this one does sound like a down the line rip off of the other regions. I`d imagine the price will be higher than the R2/4 version, but it might be worth holding out until closer to R1 release date and see what goes.
