I`ve gone for this as well, looked too good to pass up at £17.99.
As for the dredded SonicStage software, there seems to be an alternative called "voidMP3FM" available from drvoid.com here, but be wary of the forums as they seem to be mainly spam!

have a look on the sony support site and see if the mp3 filemanager software is compatible with this model. You can just drag and drop mp3s onto the player using that software. I had a sony mp3 player for a couple of years and never used sonic stage.
