Garmin eTrex Camo GPS £67.95

Just spotted this last night. I`d looked at handheld GPS units for a few yrs now, but never got one due to the price, even basic ones being over £100. I have a Pocket PC map based one, but there are a few uses I could make for one of these.

This is like the basic eTrex, except it has a camoflage casing rather than bright yellow like the standard eTrex. It also has some sort of database in it that tells you the best time for hunting and fishing at your location if that`s any good to you....lol

It`s a basic GPS, no mapping or anything. But can plot a route when out walking, and have you find your way back to starting point. Also useful as a speedo, I do kite buggying, and a lot of the lads use these as speedos, which is one of my planned uses for it.

Only ordered last night, so hasn`t come yet, although mines showing as shipped. They also have a bike handlebar mount for £8.95, which I got too. :)

My theory is they got these in and they weren`t selling well, due to the camo casing (the yellow is nice and bright). But looking on the net a lot of places are selling this for over £100. Even the base model yellow one is more expensive on Expansys.

Good buy if you have a use for one. :)

Bought one of these 4 weeks ago from Expansys. Only £5 for next morning delivery (I couldn`t wait) - it was waiting on my desk at 9am! I got it because I did click on marvo`s link previously.

Thank you marvo for introducing me, the kids love it (and so do I) - we are The Bogbrushers. The eTrex camo is perfect for it, as it looks more like a mobile phone than the yellow on does. If you want to know what I`m talking about click marvo`s link.

glad the link worked!

It is a great pastime, I am Marvo434 and have only "scored" about 14 but value type over numbers! About to claim my first ever overseas point, in Florida.
Enjoy.

Marvo (and any one else),

I highly recommend the Thorndon Park Series of caches:-

http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=3de7d55e-b29d-46c9-a821-6a15f4acc94f

(we did all 11 in a day a couple of weeks ago).

And getting back on topic, then the Garmin GPS is a bargain for walkers and geocachers on a budget. A great accompaniment to a map and compass, but not a replacement for them!

I`ll have a look at that Geocaching site, I have looked at it a couple of years ago I think. Sounds good. :)

Mine came yesterday, and I`m thoroughly impressed with it. I`ve been looking at then for a few years now, but never got one due to them being mostly well over £100. I got a Pocket PC version last year for in the car, but this is great for outdoors.

I tried it out last night, going for a walk over the sand dunes on our local beach. The controls are very easy to pick up. First I set a way point on the beach at a brick we found, then we walked over the dunes looking for something we`d remember to look for on the way back.

We found an old plastic container, so set a waypoint where that was, and carried on to the pier at the far end of the dunes. Once we got there, I went into the waypoints and chose the container as a GOTO point. We followed the compass arrow through the dunes, not really looking at which paths we were on. It counted down the distance to the waypoint, and gave an ETA of when we`d get there based on our current speed.

As we got close it was counting down in feet, 100, 80, 60 etc. Got to 20ft, then started going back up, and the arrow was pointing behind us. I said to my son, I think we`ve passed it, so we turned round and let it count back down. Sure enough there was the container, about 4ft from us, so it`s accurate to at least 4ft, in those conditions anyway. It was also showing our altitude accurately as we were going up and down the dunes.

Then we set the brick on the beach as the next GOTO point. Same again, it got us back to within 4ft of it.

It has a lot of features that they play down in the adverts on the websites. You don`t really need the next couple up in the range, which say they do WAAS, and that this doesn`t. In fact the manual says it does do WAAS, but also that it`s irrelevant for us here, as that only works in the US, so not something that`s worth payign extra for.

I`ve tried it in the car against the car speedo and the car speedo was showing 5mph faster (the same happens with my Pocket PC based GPS, as car speedos are set a bit higher to allow for errors, wear in the tyres etc).

Today I tried it at work. I`m a bus engineer, so took it out on roadtest with me to check against the bus speedo for accuracy (another handy use for it when drivers complain of the speedo looking inaccurate, which happens fairly often). This is where it showed how accurate the GPS was, the speed was exactly the same on the GPS as the bus speedo. This is how it should be, as unlike a car, buses and lorries have their speedos calibrated on a rolling road, so should be accurate when working correctly. So nice to see the GPS matched the speed spot on.

Unfortunately, I had a right run in with Expansys yesterday over the handlebar mount I ordered for it, at the same time...what a joke. But that`s a thread for Retailer Reviews. :)

Here`s a link to my post in Retailer Reviews, sorry for the rant. :)

Expansys.com - what a joke !!
