RE: Should I buy the LG 3200e?

Hulk,

I just bought one (from Toys`r`us!) and it`s working nicely. I borrowed some mate`s discs to test it out with the especially `difficult` ones and it ran Gladiator`s bonus disc fine (as well as the film, of course). In fact everything ran brilliantly except for the Toy Story bonus disc (disc 3) which lots of players are having trouble with (including Playstation 2, so it`s not just these low-end players). This disc crashed the machine (I needed to pull the plug to reset it) I think the more convoluted the nested menu systems get on these discs, the more trouble you have. I`ve run the TS-D3 on my PC and the menu system is VERY deeply nested, so there`s the answer.

However, other threads on this forum are from people who have contacted LG about it and they are swapping out players with updated firmware, so that`s what i`m gonna do. I checked the firmware on mine and it`s v1.4 which is quite recent (recent enough to play Gladiator) but obviously not recent enough ... so I shall be calling LG myself soon.

I reckon that so long as the manufacturer is happy to either ship out a cd with updated firmware on it (or, indeed, as seems the case with LG , a whole new machine) then i think it`s ok to go with players that stumble with certain discs. (cos it seems it`s recifiable in most, if not all, cases).

All in all - £130 is VERY reasonable for this player .. so go buy!

Well done, very clever, very amusing.

Folks, I admit it, ... I`ve been had. I hope everyone else will be as honest as me.

First Player ... I`m `asking the audience` !!

Dear all,
I`m now fed up with watching films on my PC so i want a nice cheap first DVD player. At the moment my needs are humble and when the cash is flowing freely (heh! when does cash EVER flow freely?!) I shall buy something more sexy.

ANYWAY ... I can get an LG-3200e for £130 from Toys`r`us ...but I have read and digested most of these forums and views differ wildly, so i`d welcome some more for further confusion. I will be wanting to play Toy Story - disc 3 and the matrix. It looks like it`s not possible to do a DIY firmware upgrade with LG and they need to be sent back, unlike Samsung and Hitchi amongst others. So it`d be more convenient to get one such player. I also have my eye on the Samsung 511 which is £170 in Currys.

It might be a big ask but i`d like to be able to disable Macrovision if possible .. just because i may want to copy a disc occasionally to show to my parents (who will NEVER get a player - trust me!). Are these add on boxes from Maplins satisfactory, or is it preferable to get a player which can be remote hacked?

Sorry about all the questions ... but then that`s what forums are all about innit? :) Bearing in mind that:

- i`m looking in the sub-£200 sector
- i`d like the convenience of DIY firmware U/G if it`s ever necessary
- macrovision removal is quite important
- as is multi-region (preferably remote hack)

Any advice greatly appreciated.

cheers, and hello by the way

Pete.
