"Alone in the world" by Hector Malot just made me cry. It is so emotional that the book became my favorite story. It is the most dramatic subject I have ever read. I also prefer "Whale Talk". In a free book summary, I wrote about it that if you have perseverance, you will keep on going no matter what situation you are in. It is a masterpiece, I guarantee.
