VCD formats on the Aiwa 370

Ok, so I`ve bought the Aiwa. I`ve dumped an old skiing video into whitebook VCD format and it works as expected. I read somewhere that the Aiwa can support XVCD - does anyone know what bitrates etc can be supported.

Thanks,

F.

Answered my own question....

... by going into Richer Sounds, trying it out (it does) and then buying it!

So far 100% satisfied. Yes the remote is a bad layout, yes it is a cheap machine lacking in some features, but it does what I bought it to do, so I am happy.

RE: Short vs Long filenames on Aiwa 370 and other MP3-capable DVD players.

You can have long (31 char) filenames in ISO format (or in fact an extension of ISO, but very standardised). Kenwood car MP3 player and others work with it fine. It is not the same thing as Joliet.

I know the Aiwa does not support this, but some other players do. What I was wondering was what happens when you put such a disk in the Aiwa - does it truncate and play or does it reject the disk?

Short vs Long filenames on Aiwa 370 and other MP3-capable DVD players.

I`ve been thinking about buying a Aiwa for some time now - I believe I can survive without SVCD and macrovision disable, and I was scared off buying a Scan by all the horror stories on this forum. At least the Aiwa and LG3350 appear to be able to play most DVD`s properly, which after all is the main aim of a DVD player!

But if I get an Aiwa, will it play the same CD-R`s I burn for my in-car MP3 player? For these I always use ISO format with long filenames. Will the Aiwa just truncate the filenames, or would I have to re-burn the disks? And are there any DVD players (apart from the Scan) that handle long filenames?

Thanks,

F.

RE: If Aiwa 370 is not available, should I buy a Scan (or clone)?

Not too keen on the LG, as I don`t need 5.1 and I think I might need VCD.

Scan/Logix etc - I feel at the moment there are too many questions hanging over it. I love the way the Scan is being actively developed and supported, but at the end of the day how many disks do give a problem? The idea of half watching a rented DVD and then having it stop is terrifiying!

Doesn`t anyone have inside knowledge of why the Aiwa is out of stock? Jimbo? I can`t understand how a correctly-priced DVD player, that has just had good reviews, could suddenly be pulled from the market? Are they still selling in the States and in continental Europe? Being out of stock until March doesn`t make any sense either!

Oh well, for the moment I guess I`ll have to keep going out to the cinema - at least here in Bristol we have a good choice!

If Aiwa 370 is not available, should I buy a Scan (or clone)?

So just when I worked out that the player I wanted to buy was the Aiwa, they disappear completely!

Based on the fact that I would like MP3 and VCD playback, and I don`t need 5.1 decode, should I buy the Scan? It is nice to see it being well supported, but I don`t really want to pay to be a beta-tester. And the one issue that still confuses me is the problem of certain disks not playing. At the end of the day this is the most important function of a DVD player, and if all the cheap players really can`t cope, then I had better go and buy a Sony. So is it worth the risk? Or will Aiwa suddenly start selling the 370 again?

Hopefully someone here can enlighten me!

RE: Just bought an Aiwa 370.

I phoned Comet on Saturday and was told that no 370`s were left, and that their computer system would have any stock left listed, so I didn`t bother driving out to my localish stores :-(

What is the official reason that the 370 supply has stopped? I tried to ring Aiwa today, but gave up. I still want one, since the LG`s lack of VCD is more anoying then the addition of 5.1 which I would not use for the time being.

Does Jimbo know the answer?

RE: AIWA 370!! Where are you?

I`ve been looking for one too, with no luck. I *don`t* need 5.1, and I *do* want VCD playback, so the LG is not for me. If anyone finds an Aiwa in the UK, let me know!

Thanks,

F.
