help! graphics problem

Upgraded an old pc recentley for a friend (PIII 800Mhz) with on board graphics. We installed a ATI Radeon 9250 PCI graphics card (256mb) and all appeared well on games that we tried - Enclave and Prince of Persia

After a day while playing Enclave red lines appear on the screen and sometimes crashes.

Prince of Persia again has problems with it sometimes all of a sudden flashing white on the screen for a split second.

This is bugging me, drivers are catalyst 4.9 and running windows xp and everything else seems normal on the pc. I have tried uninstall/installing again to no avail however I noticed when trying to install the control centre it stated that no ATI hardware was found????? but in display properties all the ati tabs are there.

Please help.
