Sony RDR-GX7
I have had my DVD recorder for about two years. It has been sent in for repair 3 times. It went to Sony, as CC could not resolve the issue. The "dirty" messages!! I have read at least three other posts on this site that experienced the same problems with not reading disks, not finalizing and "disk dirty" messages on NEW disks. CC wanted to replace my unit with a new Sony RDR-GX3, but after trying it out and also trying the 500 and an LG model, I demanded that they try to fix my model. so they replaced the drive and sensor and whatever else...and said I should be like new. I was for two weeks. Then the same. I unplugged it and forgot about it for about a month. When I plugged it in again to be "ready" to speak with repair....IT WORKED FINE. Imagine my joy. I like the features of my set. What I did find out, is that my machine prefers Sony and Memorex disks. And it definitely has a problem with Fuji. Fuji used to be okay....but no more. I`ve even tried different batches, as I had about four. So, if anyone has this problem--unplug your unit to reset the processor and only use Sony disks, and possibly Memorex. I have been in luck now for over 3 months. Happy New Year.

RE: Sony RDR-GX3

I purchased my RDR-GX7 in 2/04. I understand the GX3 has replaced it. The GX7 has better editing features---but that`s where it ends. I am now afraid of anything related to the GX7.
If I had been more diligent, it would have been replaced by my maintenance warranty long before now. However, I did not always rush it back to repair--which always took over a month, because it had to sent back to Sony. Sony!!! And I trusted the Sony name!
Now, on it`s 3rd repair cycle--the dealer is offering to trade it in....for a model that costs...less than $300 (GX3). I paid $499 and this model has advanced features, so we have not resolved the trade yet.
I read two additional reviews on this unit today (a bit late!!) "Disk dirty" is such a dirty, dreaded phrase. It seems to disfavor some brands of discs.
If it does not like the disk you cannot get it out because there is no emergency disk eject, so the unit 'locks up'.
Sometimes when attempting to record, on a new disk, it locks up and finally you get the dreaded beep and message that "disk is dirty", but the disc is brand new. This also has occurred on several disks that I was planning to add a taping. The disks are carefully kept in slim cases to protect. This problem was intermittent during the first 9 months. It has become increasingly worse since the 2nd factory repair. Now, one month following last service....it`s happening most of the time and finally--it will not read ANY disk...NONE!!!
And now I have ALL this disks that I can`t finalize and will lose hours and hours of editing work. Disks that I was making from edited 8mm video!!! I am mad!!! Can anyone tell me how I can finalize these disks in progress?? Please!!!
