My DVD writer not compatible with my DVD player ?

I have bought an external DVD writer for my PC, but after burning a film on a DVD+RW disc I am not able to play it in my DVD player (Toshiba SD-231ESB1) as I get the message "incorrect disc".
I would appreciate any advice
