RE: DVD Recorder Query

I would recommend the JVC DR-M10. This has a digital timebase corrector (missing from cheaper models). I use this for copying VHS/SVHS/Beta/Hi8/V2000 to DVD. I`ve not tried any VHS Macrovision encoded tapes however since I don`t have any (never really used VHS myself). I also use a PC system, but this is harder work for certain. If you do go down this road, be sure to get a video capture card with Hardware MPEG Encoder. Many use software and tend to drop frames. Consider the Hauppauge PVR250 for example. You will need Windows XP, don`t even consider any other operating system.

RE: Has anyone bought a "JVC DRM1" Dvd Recorder???????????????

You`re right about the limitations of DVD-RW in that you need to select Video Mode (compatible with all DVD players) or VR Mode (compatible with only a few new players like Panasonics), at the start. This is a limitation of the DVD-RW ("minus") format, not of the machine. The DVD+RW ("plus") doesn`t do this. However DVD-R disks are about half the price of DVD+R because they are far more popular. Also, no "plus" machines support DVD-Ram. Within these limitations, I still think the JVC is the ultimate DVD recorder. Even though they can hang sometimes!

I`ve got a Panasonic DVD-S75 which plays DVD-Ram and DVD-RW VR mode. I can then record any edited compilations from the JVC`s DVD-RW/DVD-RAM, playing on the Panasonic, back to DVD-R on the JVC. Not ideal but it works and the quality is still outstanding if you use S-Video.

RE: JVC DR-M1 DVD Recorder

That`s how mine locked up too. Wish I knew which resistor!

My favourite disks are TDK DVD-RW Scratchproof from www.svp.co.uk. They`re about a quid each but completely indestructible.

RE: JVC DR-M1 DVD Recorder

Mine locked up recently, and when I unplugged and reconnected, the tuner had no sound. And it still doesn`t! Somehow it thinks it`s in a PAL-B region of Europe and I`ve not found how to reset it. I`ve asked JVC for help.

I would love to know what the mod is to prevent lock-ups. Almost certainly a firmware update. I`ve got no guarantee left on mine now, so anything like this I`ll have to do myself. Did yours get this mod?

I think multiregion on this is going to be difficult. Basically it`s a computer, which will know its region, with an LG-Hitachi GMA-4020B DVD drive inside it, which will also know its region. So both the internal drive and the JVC would need region modding. I`m too coward to try!

For more info on the internal drive, see:

I`m no longer using the satellite link because I have Sky+ now, and the JVC can`t drive that. With Sky+ there`s little need anyway.

Did you have trouble with different brands of DVD-Ram? The only ones I was 100% happy with was Panasonic. Others would sometimes break up into blocks.

Colin

RE: JVC DR-M1 DVD Recorder

Thanks, that`s a great help. I reckon then it`s just an infra-red LED so I can easily make my own. If anyone has one of these and a multimeter to check the resistance on "Diode" range both ways on the plug, that would be handy.

I`m hoping my machine is region-free, I got it from Richer Sounds and most of their stuff is. Cost me £175.

Cheers,

Colin

** UPDATE **

Many thanks to Ian (broadsword_uk), I`ve now made my own remote sender consisting of an infra-red LED and a jack plug!

Yet to find out if mine is region-free, most Richer Sounds stuff is. If so, at least this would prove it is possible. Will update here.

RE: JVC DR-M1 DVD Recorder

I wonder if you can help. I`ve just bought a DR-M1. Actually, no I bought it a month ago but it`s just come back from repair! Anyway, it`s missing the satellite link cable. Doubtless you don`t use yours if you have Sky+, but I have regular Sky. Could you look at the plug on this link and tell me if it is a stereo or mono 3.5mm jack plug? Even more of a cheek to ask, could you maybe take a photo of what`s inside the sender (if it comes apart). I want to make my own because a replacement from JVC is £28. Or fancy selling yours, or swap for some DVD-RAMs? No, I didn`t think so!

Any help at all on this component most appreciated.

Regards,

Colin
