RE: what spec pc needed?
John I was in the same position...I never built a PC b4 in my life..scared the Sh*t outta me when I got all the parts and suddenly thought right where does all this go....if u get a good instruction booklet with the motherboard(search on google) ...this is the most important purchase..the rest is relativly easy...altho puttin the heatsink on was a bit of a worry....it really aint that hard and once you done it the sense of achievment is a bit better than goin down to PC world and payin double the price for a outta the pack job. If ya go down the self build route and get stuck drop me an email and i`ll try to help..or if ya want any other questions answered...scoot1on1(no SPAM)@yahoo.com ..dont incl anything between the ( )

RE: what spec pc needed?
Hi John
Depending on your IT skills you could build your own computer and use some of the parts from your old computer thus saving costs. If you don`t want to play elaborate games then a standard grx card should suffice, 512 mb ram is the least you would want these days but u may be able to use the 256 u got and slot it into the new motherboard, Id say all in all you could get a half decent home build computer with 80gb hard drive for about £200 prob cheaper(if you can use the parts u got)
If u look at www.ebuyer.co.uk (just 1 example)...u can see how much the different parts cost
RE: Noob Needs help on purchasing dvd recorder
If I get a dvd rewriter for my computer, do I then have to worry about compatibility problems with my dvd recorder then?? ...and the two recorders that I have mentioned will they play any dvds I write with say a sony dvd rewriter or is there more complications in having to choose a dvd rewriter that will comply with the dvd recorder, and they say technology is making our life easier :/
Noob Needs help on purchasing dvd recorder
Hi
Im a complete noob on the dvd recorder front, and would like to know what the readers of this forum suggest.
1. I want the recorder to be able to play backup copies of my original dvds
2. Id like to be able to lend out my dvd copies to my friends if they wanted to borrow them, and without a compliance issue (and as future proof as poss)
3. Is it possible to copy dvds to dvd on a recordable dvd player, or is it comparable to the VCR were you connected the two VCRs and pressed play on one and record on the other?
Two machines I have seen is the Panasonisc E50 or Sony GX3, although if there are any other recorders you can recommend :)
I think the main concern is future proof, or should I wait till things iron themselves out, ie dont want to end up with the Betamax of the dvd world :/
I can afford approx £250-350, and would be grateful if you could suggest the best dvd recorder that covers most, if not all, the above points.
Thanks in advance
RE: Aldi -- Pentium 4 160 GB Hard disk £849
My son bought himself a medion computer last year from PC World...to cut a long story short... well 6 mths short and numerous phone calls.. not knowing a*se from elbow come to mind, we eventually got a replacement, this is still a medion build and as far as I know he hasn`t had any problems with this one. I saw the comp your talkin about at aldi also, and I must admit I thought it was a good buy, but if you have any computer knowledge or even just a little like me, Id go for a build your own, Ive got top spec machine now and all the parts only cost me appprox £500 (not incl monitor)...and believe me if I can build one anyone can!!......

RE: Tiscali broadband
Ive had the tiscali 512k package for abt 8 months now...altho I havent had any problems with connecting it is sometimes slow...and their billing methods are well lets say shambolic at best.
www.adsl.org.uk , as mentioned here in a previous post, has a message board for tiscali users, and if you read it you wouldn`t touch them with a very long barge pole, however forums only express the negative points of the service and not really the positive ones I find. I personally have had no problems with the service on a whole except billing...as the billing system happens whenever you least expect it..it doesnt come out every month from your bank..sometimes every 3 or maybe 1 or maybe 2..but if u make allowances for this then there is no problems.
If you could afford it thought I would go for Nildram, as they seem a more stable company, and have high speed tests.....thats who I shall be goin with once the Year contract runs out on Tiscali...
