format conversion software

Can anyone tell me of a video format conversion tool that is worth its money, or, even better, freeware? I have personal files as MPGs & AVIs which I would like to convert and burn for viewing as VCD or S-VCD on my DVD player.
I would be very grateful for any assistance.

Mico Diamante 3000

Is there a multi-region hack available for the Mico Diamante 3000? I would like to find out also if its firmware is capable of upgrading to play VCDs. I am new to the world of DVD players, and have a sister in the USA who wishes to move to the UK and wants to bring her DVD collection with her. Will there be any problems playing region 1 DVDs thru a UK TV using RGB connections? Help please! All replies will be gratefully received.
