What about the Samsung DVDH40E 40GB HD and DVD-R/RAM at £310

Having read all the arguements on which format is best, I have a feeling this one will run and run or be solved by the price of DVD-R/+R media and which is most favoured for piracy (cynical I know).

If mini-disc and CD`s had been released at the same time, most people would have got more benefit from mini-disc than CD and there is a similar comparison between DVD+R/RW and DVD-RAM. Who know`s - the technologies will probably develop still further before long and neither will be a winner!. On the other hand, strong opinion is so equally divided both may be around with equal share of the market.

Anyway I reckon £310 for a DVD-RAM/R recorder with 40GB of HD and 5.1 appears unmissable all arguements considered - the name becomes a little less relevant too. Has anyone read any reviews or got one?

Just set my system up. I have the same problem with SVCD`s. Also I can`t use the Go To function with these discs which is a bit inconvenient. I suppose as long as it plays them that`s the main priority!

As for reviewing this system. I partially agree with Pioneer Man. The speakers on this system sound fine until you connect better ones, then the limitations really show up (don`t let this stop you from buying it though!). I was fortunate to have some Phillips and Wharfedale speakers left over from previous `surround sound` systems - and having connected these, the system is very capable indeed. Sure, you`re not going to compete with an `enthusiasts` Home Cinema system for volume but who wants to be deaf by the age of 50 anyway. Also, I can`t justify spending twice as much as I can never get the volume up too high because I risk waking the Kids up!

The picture is far better than others that I have seen for the £100 mark too.

It plays MP3, CDR, CDRW, VCD,SVCD,JPEG, DVDR and is easily converted to Region Free. You will not get a more versatile player with full surround capabilities and good picture for anywhere near £125 from anywhere else. Add some better speakers if you can get them cheap enough and you will be really delighted with your system.
