Schneider 856 - bought one and heres what I think....

My local ADSA were selling 856s and pacific 750s. The 856 has a few nifty features. First off it has a built in 5.1 decoder and can output to 6 analogue outputs. I havent tested this feature as I have a kenwood 5.1 decoder and I use the digital coax connection (I dont have an optical lead long enough yet)

Video output is via svideo, compotite or component (Y,CR,CB) but I use good old SCART.

VCD playback was good, I have a variety of VCDs including some with suspect RIFF headers, I didnt need to use VCDeasy to re-create some of my VCDs (which fail on my SONY dvd player, teh SONY needs fully decoded MPG headers to play) I havent yet tried non-vcd format MPGs or data MPGs.

SVCD played without difficulty or skipping (nor any of the lip sync problem I have seen reported)

MP3 playback is a mixed bag, I cannot seem to fast forward a track and the DIR structure is of the 8.3 variety - a little hard to sort out your CD full of MP3s. Playback was crisp and did not skip or distort.

for £100 I think it was a good buy and certainly better than my old LG3200E.

The main gripe I have is that the remote control is badly laid out, the LG3200E had a nice remote layout but i`m sure I will learn to use it. I havent tried demacro or vidoe taping yet but from the posts I doubt this will work.
