not to burst your bubble but,
as a fellow 709 owner i consider my self lucky that it can play most vcds and dvds
without overheating first.
and then there is the layer change problem with the matrix for example.
my machine is region 1.

the only place to get expert advice for your dvd player is to go to "709online.com"
the site will explain how you can use the remote that came with the player.
BUT-if you are in region one USA, forget trying to play pal dvds as this machine can only be made to be macro free and play ntsc. in europe
it is able to play pal/ntsc

with no disc and draw closed
press on the remote the following in order
setup,>>,[<<,>>].
