RE: [VIDEO] Wandavision (and others)

I am very intrigued, I hope this series finishes before my free 6 months expires, it's 9 episodes but I can't remember when mine ends.

I like how each week so far has been a parody of sitcoms from a specific era.

RE: [VIDEO] Coronavirus, anyone starting to get worried?

Before we get all "good, glad the Police are clamping down", read this Twitter thread about actual data:
https://twitter.com/rowlsmanthorpe/status/1349459843833352192

The TL;DR of it is... people are not self isolating long enough after showing symptoms. And this is most likely because the government is not providing any support to people who have Covid.

If we paid people with Covid to stay at home, we would probably be out of this by now.

RE: [VIDEO] The Failed Presidency of Donald Trump

It begins...
https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/trump-jr-inauguration-funds-dc-attorney-b1787727.html

Quote:
They allege that the Presidential Inaugural Committee “improperly wasted its fund” when it paid almost $50,000 (£37,000) to the Loews Madison for a block of hotel rooms on behalf of the Trump Organization.

The reservation was arranged by Mr Trump Jr’s personal assistant, the court filings claim, and the rooms appeared to have been given to a personal friend of the president’s eldest son.

The incident emerged as part of the DC attorney general’s wider probe into the alleged misuse of more than $1 million (£733,000) by the Presidential Inaugural Committee, which is accused of “grossly overpaying” for event space at the Trump International Hotel in DC during the inauguration.

I don't expect them to get punished for all the corruption, but at least someone is trying now, and at least we don't have another 4 more years of their corruption.

Something very funny:

I think the Senate is a 50/50 split with the Vice President holding the casting vote in a tie? Which means we still have to wait 6 days.

I wonder if Trump might go bankrupt, the number of companies and organisations pulling contracts. If his rumoured finances are as bad as the rumours say they are, this might really hurt him.

This might be Pence being smart. I think if you are removed with the 25th, you can run again, but if you are impeached and that passes in the senate, you can't?

In my working environment, it is critical you admit when you are wrong and be humble about your mistakes.

Apparently not in government:

I have two cigarette lighters, one in the front on the dashboard but also one in the boot which I think might work all the time. The boot faces South and also where the battery is.

I guess either way it's going in the boot!

My car is over 15 years old so it may do. I will test it when it comes at the weekend.

Thank you all!

(I don't really see the problem in Boris driving 7 miles somewhere to take exercise, other than perhaps the increase chance of a car accident which potentially fills a hospital bed. It's only driving for 15 minutes maybe? I have to do that to visit a big supermarket!)

I don't really care about Boris exercising (legally) 7 miles from #10. What I do care about is the private companies with connections to the Tory party making money out of delivering food packages to struggling families by providing them with pathetic amounts of food.

"What we need is that those in the most need will be prioritised regardless of who they are."

At some point you have to recognise your privilidge. You can't agree with wanting everyone to have equal opportunities without agreeing with steps to give them that.

This is the real problem with change. Equality costs people with privilidge, which makes it so hard to achieve.

We live in a society and on a planet with limited resources, you can't make some people more equal to others without adjusting the scales.

"I disagree, it actually is that even though it wasn't designed that way."

It was exactly designed that way, the interactions which lead a person from being a normal citizen to storming the Capitol building were designed by psychologists to trigger specific responses along with feeding them the content.

They were not designed with that in mind, but the people doing it did not consider (or did not care) that this would also happen with bad interactions as much as good ones.

Quote:
Si Wooldridge says...
"Mainstream new organisations read out tweets as a reaction to news or include them in articles, which if I recall correctly started around the Arab Spring.

Hiring and firing policies are amended on the fly based on social media activity.

Political policies can change based on social media reaction.

I'd rather it wasn't this way, but it is and we now have to live with the consequences.

And it's worse than the average public square, sometimes it feels like a public execution."

See logical fallacies:

  • Slippery Slope
  • The Texas Sharpshooter
These things always happened, but they happened in response to newspapers or in other ways. In some cases it's terrible they happen at all, but also I do not think they happen as much as you think they do. But you may be of the opinion that happening once is too many times, which whilst is a nice opinion to have for some things is not a good way to change policies of the world.

RE: [VIDEO] Coronavirus, anyone starting to get worried?

Those two women being fined is awful. Five miles isn't far to drive for a walk, especially when we were told we could drive somewhere to walk.

I have a real problem with my car battery, I had to buy two last year, one for each lockdown, because I didn't use my car for a few weeks and the voltage dropped too low so a cell died.

So what do I do now with this lockdown, buy a third battery at £140 a go? Throwing the dog in the car and driving for 20 minutes is the ideal way of charging it without just wasting petrol for no reason. But am I going to get fined for that?

Social media isn't that though. It might look like that, but it's not. It doesn't work that way, it wasn't designed to work that way.

"It's not a problem (yet) when they're 'on your side'..."

It's still a problem, social media has allowed fringe groups to influence the mainstream in a way we have never seen before.

I know a few people have cited all sorts of reasons for the rise of extremism, including blaming the left, but I am pretty sure the main reason is just base human instincts being fed by computer algorithms to generate engagement for the purpose of profit.

There is next to none of this on old forum sites, because that's just not how they work. Although just like how people rarely buy newspapers for good news, how much of our internet interactions with each other are about good news?

I am pretty sure we all know people in real life who are on different sides to the political spectrum to us, but we get along just fine. But inside the world of social media where algorithms thrive on our interaction, being angry nearly always wins.

After 2016, Twitter and Facebook began to try and do something about that, but they are heavily hindered by making lots of money out of it. It'll probably take government intervention for them to actually do something about that.

People will go off and join small isolated right wing extreme sites, and I understand why that would scare some. But those sites were already there, and the unfiltered insanity of the places will put off a lot of people falling down those rabbit holes, because most of them will take a peak into the void and be scared by what they see. As opposed to now where they are on more moderated platforms where extremists have to be more careful about what they do.

I am hopeful someone, somewhere will do something about them.
