Review for Gutshot
Jack is a professional gambler who is down on his luck. Unable to get even a payday loan he takes a wager from a mysterious gambler and this sets into motion a series of events that will effect not just him, but his family. He must seek help from a loan shark, but that might put him in even worse trouble where all debts will eventually be paid.
There is nothing worse than an average film. A great film, you can gush on about all the positives, a terrible films you can tear it to pieces, but an average film... just exists. This is what Gutshot is. It's not a bad film. I don't regret watching it, but it's not a film I would recommend to anyone. It is the type of film that I could watch if it was on, but not a film I would make any effort to watch again.
George Eads as Jack is fine, nothing special, but he does exactly what he needs to do. He was never someone who lit the screen on fire in CSI, usually taking the backseat to William Petersen and here he just plays the cheeky, hustler that we have seen played by dozens of other people. Stephen Lang as the ultra-creepy Duffy does his job well and this is a great character, just more should have been done with him. AnnaLynne McCord was sexy as Duffy's trophy wife, but really only brought her amazing looks to this two dimensional role. The film is stolen by Ted Levine as Duffy's brother. Levine, people may remember as Buffalo Bill in Silence of the Lambs who even outcreeps Duffy.
Of course, it would be wrong no to mention the cameos by Steven Seagal as the loan shark (with Vinnie Jones as one of his bodyguards). The cameo is just that, a cameo. He doesn't bring anything to the film and if you are a fan of him from his classic 1990s films, this film is not a performance you will remember of his.
The actual film itself is as generic as they come. Guy is down and out, take a bad deal, bad deal goes worse and then he has one final chance to get out of it. There is nothing new and if you have seen any Hustler or Gambling film, then you will have seen most of what happens in this film. That's not to say it wasn't enjoyable, it just not very memorable. If you have a spare ninety minutes and there's nothing else worth watching, then you might want to give it a try.
