Your Opinions and Comments
This film is an unusual one for Jet Li on two points. First, he plays a very understated guy, not as cool as some of his other characters. Second, it`s one of a very few films where he`s allowed to talk in his native Cantonese dialact, instead of being overdubbed by a Chinese actor.
The plot is actually quite good for this type of film, it`s not overdone, or overdirected. It all revolves around a mysterious killer known as the "Angel Of Death" who has been stalking "evil" men in the South East Asia region and knocking them off. One guy who get`s the "Angel" treatment has a mad grandson who is sworn on vengence, and hires an army of hitmen (one of these, Li and his "manager", Tsang) to hunt down the killer.
The acting is great, especially Eric Tsang who steals every scene he`s in. There`s a lot of humour too, which is good, because I think the film could try to get over-serious without it.
The DVD itself is pretty good for a change, original soundtrack and subtitles available as an option (thankyou HKL!) and a couple of extras such as a trailer and a music video. The video transfer is pretty good too.
Hopefully this sets the standard by which future HKL releases will be measured, if this is true then I get the feeling my Mastercard is going to have a very busy year :-)
If you`re looking for non-stop action like in Once Upon A Time In China, then you`ll probably be disappointed, but this is a good film.
The picture is sharp, and the sound does its job (it`s in dubbed English and a much better sync-sound Cantonese track).
There are a few decent extras, as well as the usual HKL trailers for their other discs - ones to look out for are Drunken Master, New Dragon Gate Inn and Legend Of A Fighter.
