Synopsis:
The Other, based on a novel by former actor Tom Tryon and directed by Robert Mulligan (renowned for his Oscar-nominated work on To Kill a Mockingbird), tells the tale of two nine-year-old twins, Niles and Holland (played by real life twins Chris and Martin Udvarnoky), who live with their family on a Connecticut farm in the 1930s. They are taught by their grandmother (legendary German actress Uta Hagen) to play a supernatural game. When accidents occur and events take a murderous twist, the increasingly unsettling relationship between the twins comes under scrutiny.
Mulligan`s psychological horror film is comparable to William Friedkin`s The Exorcist, released a year later, Richard Donner`s The Omen (1976), and Stanley Kubrick`s The Shining (1980). Like these classic genre films, The Other depicts deeply disturbed children, and has gained a huge reputation for its haunting atmosphere and moody cinematography, which critic Roger Ebert has described as "perverse and menacing".
